Witchhunts here in the U.S.A. today (literal witchhunts, I mean)

Here in this thread, please post any information you find about witchhunts (in the literal sense) here in the U.S.A. within the past few decades.

Yes, there still are witchhunts going on in the U.S.A. today -- although, admittedly, they aren't usually as lethal as the witchhunts of centuries past or the witchhunts now going on in Africa. Two examples:

1) The "Satanic ritual abuse" scare of the 1980's and early 1990's, with a mini-resurgence in 2002 to 2006.

2) The neo-Pentecostal practices of "strategic level spiritual warfare" and "occult level spiritual warfare." For an example, see Soldiers of Christ: Insider America's Most Powerful Megachurch by Jeff Sharlet, Harper's Magazine, November 2, 2006 , about Ted Haggard. This article includes the following: "He sent teams to pray in front of the homes of supposed witches — in one month, ten out of fifteen of his targets put their houses on the market. His congregation 'prayer-walked' nearly every street of the city."

"Prayer walking" is a neo-Pentecostal practice. Haggard's church belongs to the same neo-Pentecostal religious movement as Sarah Palin and one of her pastors, Thomas Muthee, who anointed her with, among other things, a blessing to protect her against witches. Thomas Muthee is an African witchhunter. The neo-Pentecostal religious movement to which he and Haggard belong has many names, one of which is "the New Apostolic Reformation." Most people have never heard of it, but it is the world's fastest-growing religious movement these days. Neo-Pentecostals of this stripe believe in "territorial demons," which they aim to cast out via "strategic level spiritual warfare," a kind of exorcism sometimes accompanied by witchhunts.

Here's a news story, published in the U.K., about a literal witchhunt in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, here in the U.S.A.: Brandi: The Teenage Witch by Andrew Gumbel, The Independent (U.K.), Friday, 5 January 2001.

In reading about Ms. Blackbear's lawsuit, I came across another article I found extremely interesting in the light of our organization's support of every woman's right to choose. Apparently abortion is being directly linked to both witch-hunting and Satanic baby slaughter by this enlightened pastor, who makes a tidy sum from his theory if the $19.95 price of his work is an indication:

I am so glad people are organizing against this anti-American, cynical spread of hatred and misogyny, and thankful to be a part of this group!

"Strategic level spiritual warfare" and "occult level spiritual warfare" are a growing trend and may soon be coming to a city near you. The "prayer walkers" are now very active in Newark, New Jersey, and have managed to get the police department involved. See the separate thread Police-sponsored mega-exorcism (!) in Newark, NJ (and many other cities around the world).

Bruce Wilson has posted "Sarah Palin's 'Witchcraft Problem' Is Bigger Than Christine O'Donnell's 'Witchcraft Problem'" (September 21, 2010) on Talk To Action -- the blog which first broke the story of how, when Sarah Palin first went into politics, she was "anointed" by Thomas Muthee, an internationally recognized (within at least one sector of the Pentecostal/charismatic world) "apostle" who gave her a blessing to protect her against "witches." Other, even more explosive aspects of this story have not yet reached the mass media, though they are well-documented on Talk To Action. For example, Sarah Palin belongs to a prayer network headed by Mary Glazier, an avowed witch hunter here in the U.S.A.

See also the description of our meeting next week: Committee Against Satanic Panics: American connections to African witchhunts, Thursday, September 30.

P.S.: On a separate witchhunt-related topic, I just now came across Update: The Fall of a Witch-Hunter, Wild Hunt blog, Sep 21st, 2010, about Andrew L. Thomas, an Illinois Christian anti-Pagan crusader who was recently caught sexually abusing young boys.
