Update: ""Pray For Newark" Is a Model For Christian Theocratic Rule in America" by Bruce Wilson, Talk To Action, Bruce Wilson, Sat Jul 31, 2010. The title is a bit exaggerated -- I don't think it's at all likely that the "New Apostolic Reformation" folks have actually succeeded in turning Newark into a full-fledged theocracy. But they do have explicitly theocratic aims, and it's scary to see them cozying up to Newark's police department.

P.S.: A relevant news story: A Good Thing in Newark, 54 New Newark Police Officers by Pastor Rick Greene, NJ.com, Tuesday, March 02, 2010, including a photo of Rev. Dr. Bernard J. Wilks of Metropolitan Baptist Church, offering the opening prayer at the graduation ceromony for the 54 men and women of the Newark Police Academy's graduating class of 2010. Pastor Greene says:

As the opening prayer began the sanctuary was filled with the hope of a safer, more prosperous Newark. Ironically Dr. Bernard Wilks heads up the prayer team founded by Lloyd and Joanne Turner, called PrayForNewark. (PrayForNewark.org) In recent weeks the Pray for Newark team has come under fire for allegedly alienating certain groups which was to Dr. Wilks' surprise; considering they (PrayForNewark) "have no policy concerning individuals nor groups... they just pray for the safety of all people on every street in the city by street name."

So they say. Given the larger movement they're a part of, though, there's reason to be concerned that their cozying up to the police may result in increased police harassment of religious minorities and GLBT people.

A relevant post on the Out In New Jersey blog: Religious Bullshit In Newark, January 25, 2010.

Out In New Jersey also has a post about Newark police harassment of a trans-woman: What Year Is It At Newark PD?, February 19, 2010. (Looking for documentation, I found Transgender Woman Sues Newark Police Over Alleged Harassment, ABC News, By Victorial Cavaliere, Wed, Feb 17, 2010, and Newark police plan to install onboard cameras in patrol cars by James Queally, New Jersey Star-Ledger, Sunday, April 18, 2010.)

More church-to-police cozying, on a different front: "Rise of the Church-Court - "Fugitive Safe Surrender", Revisited" by Bruce Wilson, Monday January 31, 2011.
