Hike the Devil's Path in the Catskills

  • Sep 7, 2013 · 7:00 AM

Known more as the hardest day hike in the East coast outside the Presidential Traverse, I am looking to do it in 2 or 3 days. I want to spend the time hiking as well as camping in the lean to's located along the trail.

For peak baggers its a good hike to get, Indian, Twin, Sugarloaf, Plateau and West Kill. Options for Hunter and South-West Hunter are possible. I have been up SW Hunter and I know where the route is since it is considered a bushwhack up.

I am going regardless and would love to have company. I am new to the meet up and would like to meet more like minded people.

For more info on the route, here is Section Hikers page, http://sectionhiker.com/devils_path_catskills/

Paolo, thanks for info, it would be awesome to join you guys! This sounds adventurous of a hike! But I have to raincheck this one. See you all on the next hike!

I do not think I can do all the hikes, but would like to spend some days there. Need a ride from nyc too. Also lack of camping gear as well.

Why is it called "Devil's path"? Gets me worried...

    September 5, 2013

    • Paolo

I read somewhere that when outsiders first saw it, they thought it's a path so seemingly painful to tread, it could only have been created by the devil.

wow! we're dropping off like flies. ok. since no one has a plan, i'll put in mine. personally, i'd like to do this in one day, but since, originally, this was going to be a backpacking trek, i'd conditioned my mind to it and came up with a rough plan in my mind. i've never done this hike before so i'm just going by what i've read. based the tentative but originial plan of a 2-day hike, i've separted the eastern and western parts into its own separate day. (***con't in the comments)

      Day 2 - western side (2 of 2)
5.00 - Trail leaves old road, climb gets steeper.
5.34 - Top of West Kill Mtn's east ridge.
5.51 - Rock shelter, can hold 2-3 people.
7.28 - Buck Ridge lookout - very good views to the North, South, and East.
      7.38 - Summit West Kill Mtn. 3880'
7.48 - Spring to right side of trail.
10.37 - Swamp in Mink Hollow between West Kill and North Dome Mtns.
13.12 - Junction and end of Devil's Path at Spruceton Road - small parking lot.

We can camp on friday night either at Devil's Tombstone (about 10 miles from trailhead) and meetup at the trailhead on Saturday morning. Or we can head off to the Devil's Kitchen leanto, about 2 miles off the trailhead, on Friday night and meet at the junction of Devil's Path and Overlook Trail on Saturday and hike 13.75 miles to Devil's tombstone and set up camp for the night. then, sunday, we tackle 13.12 miles and finish off the western side. we need a car on both the trailhead and the trailend to shuttle us back.

i think i read from a previous post that the organizer is no longer a member of this meetup. or maybe i'm mixing this up, but if that's the case, we're really on own now. the other option is simply to join another group hiking dp on saturday. it's a day hike though for both sides of dp. i think hvh is organizing it. if there's still no clear plan for this, i'm going to be jumping ship as well and joing them.

Whoever organized this meetup needs to step up to the Same plate and show some leadership, because paolo and I don't know as to what to do. We wanna backpack the devils path traverse, doing 8 miles a day with two nights of camping.... So, if there are others who would like to do it the same way we want to, then please contact paolo or myself... And we can't coordinate time, meeting place, car spotting and more... [masked], that's my cell number just in case anyone would like to reach me directly.

Hi Brad, I don't mind taking over. However, I would like to make this as a three day backpacking trip. Hiking Friday for 8 miles and then setting up camp on mink hollow then sat hiking another 8 miles and setting up camp on the southwest lean to off of hunter, then on Sunday finishing the remaining 8 miles. We can also do it from Saturday to Monday, I believe Monday is some sort of holiday. Feel free to call me at[masked], paolo and I are pretty much on the same page. Hope you can do it this way.

I am out - been there, done that a few days ago. Did 4 out of these 5 peaks last Sat.

Got lucky with the weather but still most of the western part of the trail was wet and slippery, typical in Catskills.

The hike was extremely rewarding with the great views and very gratifying finish with enough daylight left in spite of a late start.

It was a huge challenge for the group to stay together. A few got lost, some shortened the hike and the rest were scattered all over.

    Have fun and stay safe!

Paolo and i are trying to do it as a backpacking trip but if you are doing it as a day hike, we can possibly provide the second car for the shuttle.

ok could someone please list an itinerary here with start time and location, distance per day and potential rest/camp stops, estimated completion time and location
then we can coordinate cars and riders...
also perhaps a community cook for dinners and breakfasts to lighten loads?

Paolo and I are willing to start on friday morning and head to the first campsite on mink hollow... but that's just us. Dont know what the group wants to do....one thing is for sure we would like to do this with at least two nights of camping, maybe even three. We don't want to make this into a marathon. We wanna enjoy it not regret it...lol

Correction, hiking 8 miles each of the 3 days

    August 27, 2013

Once I get a ride. I think we should coordinate accordingly as to when, where and how are we doing this trip. Seems like a lot of confusion is going on. The way I was going to do this hike which I planned awhile back, was a 3 day backpack with 2 night of camping, hiking 8 miles for 3 days. From Friday to Sunday. Camping at the mink hollow lean to area and at the hunter lean to.

    August 27, 2013

My ride dropped off, which means I would need a ride for this trip. Also, is this going to be a 3 day backpacking hike? Basically, covering 8 miles a day. If so, I would like to join in for sure, with hopes of getting a ride, which of course I will help with expenses.

so i've noticed we have a few outstanding issues: car spotting, are we going to spot supplies halfway, and is this hike going to continue to include monday even though it's not a holiday?

    August 27, 2013

  • Lou

Why not start on friday the 6th? That way we can hike 8 miles a day and be finished by sunday.

Anyone ready to talk menu and shared meals yet?
I usually bring crunchy granola bars for breaky with green tea...lunch is a salami and hard cheese and an apple
Dinner is a boil in bag instant something
lots of instant hot choco to mix with coffee bags
and a few miso soup packets

Hardest hike outside of the Presidential Traverse? Nope. This is the hardest hike, period, IMO. Devil's Path beats the Presidential Traverse for sure. I never completed this. I'm not tough enough for this one!

You are an efficient camper. You showed me yours, here's my list: tent + SLP bag + pad + a thin clothing layer 10lbs, 100 oz camelbak filled + an empty nalgene + water treatment - 10 lbs, food + stove + fuel + knife + emg kit + sweater + light gloves + beanie + goretex layer + backpack + backpack cover + flipflops - 10 lbs+. I will be hauling extra water and an extra layer for comfort. May be I should learn few tricks from you to lighten up.

well I had some brutal training backpacking across spain on the Camino...biggest lesson only ues nylon quickdry clothes and only carry the gear...extra clothes are cool but snuggling in a sleeping bag while drying wet clothes works well

Please forgive asking so many questions at once:
Are we going east/west or west/east?
    Where are we spotting cars?
Is anyone driving up from Brooklyn (or elsewhere in the city)?
Has anyone ever taken a dog on this hike?

    August 17, 2013

My vote's for east to west and a couple of bailouts in addition to the start/end points. This hike is often underestimated.

Do you have a final plan if it will be 2 or 3 days? I've heard the worst part of this trip is the lack of water access. Do you have that planned out as well? I'm really interested in doing this!
