4 miles of blueberry bushes, Giant Mountain, Rocky Peak Ridge and Montreal

Update:

I realized that I should make it clear that this is a 11 mile hike. I just realized that some of you might think that you are doing only 4 miles of hiking since some people don't read to the bottom of the descriptions.

There are indeed about 4 miles of blueberries that hopefully are ripe and haven't been devoured by the bears in the area. The 4 miles start at around mile 5 or 6 of this hike.

The Plan:

Drive Friday night to Sharp Bridge campground, camp out there. This is a car camping site, which means we are not backpacking.

Start at around 09h00, hike Giant Moutain and Rocky Ridge Peak, an easy 11 mile hike with about 4000 feet of total elevation.

We should be done around 4 to 5pm with a long break in between.

We will drive to Montreal once we finish hiking. It is a 2 hour drive from the Giant trailhead.

We will take a shower in our hotel room, maybe take a short nap, get some food and go party out.

Sunday morning, wake up late, get brunch and do some sightseeing before we head back to NY.

Now there is one option for those looking to do a shorter  easier hike.

Shorter hike option:

Do only Giant Mountain. It's an easy 4 mile hike. Takes about 3 hours round trip at a fast pace. 2 hours up and 1 hour down if you are in good shape. We will start the hike going up Giant Mountain. There those who want to take their time and just do Giant are welcome to do so. It's a 6 mile round trip hike up to Giant and back. You will miss on the blueberries.

I want to make a schedule that I want us to try to keep to in order for us to be in Montreal between 19h00 and 20h00.

Schedule:

Giant Mountain trailhead 08h30.

Giant Mountain summit 11h00

Depart Giant to Rocky Peak Ridge at 11h45

Rocky Peak Ridge summit 12h30

Depart Rocky Peak Ridge 13h00

Blueberry Mountain summit 15h30

New Russia Parking lot 16h45

On our way to Montreal 17h00

Border 18h30.

Hopefully in Montreal around 19h30 to 20h00.

The pace for this schedule is 1.57 miles per hour.

Again if anyone wants to hike this at a more leisurely pace that the one on this schedule then take the Giant Mountain option only this way we can be in Montreal at a reasonable hour or starts the hike earlier and we will catch up. I want to check in to our hotel, have a shower and be out and about getting dinner around 21h30. I don't want to get any later than 20h00.

Also if it's a hot day it would be worth to bring a beer in your backpack to drink at the summit of Giant or RPR or two for both. You should see the faces of people when you arrive there and open a beer at the summit. :)

Equipment:

Synthetic clothing

Sleeping bag

Tent (we have plenty of two person tents so this is optional. If you don't have one someone will share one with you.)

Headlamp

Map

Valid passport or green card or visa if you are from a country that requires a visa to enter Canada.

Cost of the hotel in Montreal? Depends on how many people you want to share a room with, but between 25 to 50 per person for the night.

Other than Eileen, Lisa and Chris, is anyone else driving up for this trip?

    August 12, 2014

  • Lisa

So can I just meet you guys in the daks? I don't want to go to Montreal and will stay an extra day camping /hiking

    August 11, 2014

    • Lisa

Cool! Count me in! I have a tent and whatnot and can you let the campsite know that I will be staying an extra night?

      August 11, 2014

    • Lisa

I am def coming. I will be driving but I can only offer a ride up with people. I intend on camping by myself the second night and driving home alone. I was just gonna go by myself and camp and hike for some alone time but I figure one day is cool. If the weather calls for rain I will cancel though so it's prob not a good idea that I go with people.

      August 11, 2014

  • Francisco

I have booked two suites in downtown Montreal that fit 10 people comfy and maybe more if people are willing to sleep in the floor. We have so far two cars going. If you don't have a ride check the board. Eileen is driving so far and my friend Chris is also.

    August 10, 2014

  • Erick

Awesome trip! Am in if I can get a rude for two!

    August 10, 2014

  • Francisco

I will post here on Friday what campsites we are getting. I will call the ranger ahead of time and book the sites. Sharp Bridge doesn't get a lot of traffic which makes it a nice quiet campsite. There is not cell service in Sharp Bridge so I will check the message board on your phones for the campsite number. So far we have two cars driving so it should be pretty easy.

I need those who are driving to please post here where you are driving for and how many can you take. If you are not coming anymore please change your RSVP ASAP.

it looks like a bunch of us don't have rides... i think a possible option is adirondacks trailways, but questionable on whether or not there's a drop off near the campground. then on the return, amtrak has a train leaving montreal..

Guys this event is about a week away and I need to make reservations for the hotel in Montreal this weekend otherwise we won't be able to find a place to stay. I am figuring a hotel will be about 45 per person for Saturday night. Less if we can somehow manage to squeeze in 6 people is one room.

  • Rachael

Need a ride for two people .

Thanks for the replies. I have changed the date. I will need to make reservations in Montreal for Saturday the week before so I will need to know who is coming for sure by then. Please change your RSVP ASAP if the new date doesn't work for you. The new date for the hike is August 15.

how many people are driving up? Is there a way we can put together a carpool sheet on google docs or something to make it easier? Looking for a ride but I have no idea who is driving or who to coordinate with.

    July 28, 2014

    • Francisco

It's a bit early to arrange rides. I wouldn't worry until at a week and a half before the trip. Plus half of the people on this RSVP are going to drop off by then. People who are driving will start posting soon that they have spots available. Once they do email them. We always have plenty of rides.

Hi- Looking to carpool from Queens / Manhattan. Of course, will share all expenses.

I have updated the description of the meetup. I have recalculated the total mileage for hike and posted a schedule we need to abide by to be in Montreal at a decent hour to be able to get dinner and party out.

  • Malika M.

Does anyone coming from the city have room in their car for one? Of course, I'll split all expenses.

    July 28, 2014

I know! You have to be patient. Next summer you will be up and running the trails. At least you will hopefully be well for ski season and another spring ski trip to Utah.
