Adirondacks President's Day Weekend (hiking, ice climbing, skiing, etc)

We will go up the Daks for some hiking, ice climbing, cross-country skiing or downhill skiing for President's Day Weekend. We will go again up to Elizabethtown. I will book rooms at the Cobble Hill Inn for those of you who are not staying at the house we have booked up there.

We were up there last year on President's Day and it was so much fun. We will probably have a house party on Sunday so perhaps some one of you can bring a boombox. I will update this meetup with the prices for the motel.

We will carpool from NY so please post on the comments section whether you are driving or need a ride and let people know what time you can leave NY on Friday. This way we can coordinate the rides.

To go hiking in the winter you will need:

Crampons

Ice Axe

Mountaineering Boots

Synthetic Warm Layers including base layers, a fleece, a wind braker and a warm outer layer.

Headlamp

Map of the high peaks region of the Adirondacks

Snowshoes

If you any questions please email me at [masked]

To all those participating in the Great Range Traverse, it will be happening on Sunday. Please be prepared to wake up at 4:30am as we should try to start by 6/6:30. Unless there is some way we can make it a loop, we will have to shuttle cars before hand. We will be hiking for many hours, so please bring A LOT of water and a headlamp. And of course be sure to have both microspikes and snowshoes. Lastly, get ready for a day of pure awesomeness.

Can start at the Roostercomb parking lot and finish at the Garden. Then road walk to cars for a mile and change.

      February 13, 2013

    • Chris J

I would also be willing to do a day hike in the area, and a car drop the day before maybe?

      February 14, 2013

  • Pat J.

Leaving Brooklyn Friday around noon, room for two if anyone is interested in leaving early.

Back to doing the Camp Santanoni trip on Sunday...have to be in the office Monday. Anybody want to ride down with me? It's an easy ski or snow shoe but an interesting historical site; http://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/53095.html. Send an email if interested.

What's happening Saturday besides the Great Range? Been there, done that, and SUFFERED. But we came out via the Loj which means doing Colden and Algonquin also so maybe if you go back after Marcy you will survive. If you are as stiff and tired as I was you can come with us to Camp Santanoni!

    February 13, 2013

  • Janet

Anything less ambitious than the GR I am up for. Postponing the Great Camp Santanoni ski til Monday so Saturday and/or Sunday. Send an email with any plans... thanks!

    February 12, 2013

  • Janet

I am truly impressed if you folks actually do the Great Range in one day in winter. Even if you go from Marcy back to KV it's 25 miles and 9 peaks. Have a good one!

    February 12, 2013

  • Janet

Great Range is an all-day marathon in summer. You can start either at the Garden in Keene and finish at the ADK Loj in Lake Placid or the opposite. I did it when I was twenty something and had been doing 15 mile runs on a regular basis. We ran any trails that were not so steep that you needed to hold on with your hands. We jogged out to the ADK Loj in the dark with head lamps. I was totally exhausted and could hardly walk for a week. Really want to do that on snow shoes?

Garden-Rooster comb is not the Great Range guys. It's Garden-Rooster comb.

    February 11, 2013

    • Jacqueline

:P Of course I will be sure to abide by the laws this time.

      February 12, 2013

    • Chris J

The only thing I am carrying on my back is a hefty kitchen sack full of pb&J and a milk jug full of lemonade. I would rather hike in snowshoes than microspikes anyway. More calories burned, but less joint pain.

      February 12, 2013

  • Pat J.

Tentatively aiming for Sawteeth and Gothics on Saturday, then Whiteface and Esther on Sunday. Anyone not doing the Great Range hike (which sounds fantastic) is welcome.

    February 11, 2013

  • Chris J

What is the big nasty winter day hike in the area?

    January 22, 2013

    • natan

Great Range can be done as a loop from what I remember with start/finish being relatively not far apart from each other on Route 73. Is that correct?

      February 11, 2013

    • Billy

Start/finish: Garden/Roostercomb or the other way around :)

      February 11, 2013

  • Josh C

Anyone want to ski down wright (on the ski trail) or do another BC ski tour? I guess you could hike up with a snowboard too. Ski trail is not very wide so be prepared for that.

    January 30, 2013

    • Dennis

I will be interested to do this.

      February 11, 2013

  • Janet

It's also open on Monday so you could do it on your way home.

Anyone interested in doing a x-c ski to Camp Santanoni on Sunday the 17th? This is a rare opportunity to see the Camp as it's not often open to the public. Check out the web page above. You could snow shoe in also if you prefer.

    February 11, 2013

  • Janet

I recommend microspikes rather than crampons. You can get them at any EMS, or the Mountaineer in Keene Valley. In the area they sell something similar but cheaper called YakTraks at all the grocery stores and many convenience stores. Unless it's really icy they work fine.

    February 11, 2013

  • Dorothy

    don't have monday off

    February 9, 2013

  • Janet

    oops... wrong weekend. Sorry.

    February 8, 2013

  • Janet

Is this still on, given the snow storm? If so, I think I signed up for a Whiteface snowshoe on Sunday... is that on?

35 per night per person. You get a full size bed. If you are willing to share the bed then it is half of that. Of course you will have to find someone to share it with.

    January 4, 2013

  • Dorothy

    yuup

    January 3, 2013

  • George G.

Sounds like 3 nights of lodging, what is the anticipated cost per person?

    January 2, 2013

  • Francisco

I added a small list on the description.

    January 2, 2013
