This session is oriented toward Advancing Beekeepers, but all are welcome. Seating is limited & we do take RSVPs seriously.
A swarm is the means by which a bee colony naturally reproduces.
When they "swarm," about half the bees leave their hive and find a place to wait - such as a tree branch. A swarm left undisturbed is typically calm as it awaits scouts bringing information about possible new homes and engages in the fascinating decision process described in Tom Seeley's wonderful book "Honeybee Democracy."
While no one can eliminate the urge to swarm, good beekeepers strive to manage this natural behavior by early detection and management methods that will be taught in this workshop.
