Bee Active - Advocacy Opportunities with Just Food's Ongoing Legalization Campaign

Bee friends,

As many of you probably already know, Just Food is working hard to bring NYC beekeepers out of the shadows by organizing advocacy and outreach efforts in support David Yassky's proposed bill to legalize and license beekeeping in NYC. In conjunction with these efforts, Just Food is using Pollinator Week as a platform to foster education about bees and to generate buzz in the community with the hopes of encouraging the city council to hold a hearing on the issue (which is the next step in the process if this bill is to be passed).

In any event, Just Food has recently formed a Pollinator Week Committee, which is open to anyone who wants to help in these ongoing legalization efforts. I went to the first meeting earlier this month and was a bit disconcerted to find that I was the only person there with any direct connection to the NYC beekeeping community. As such, I am sending this out in the hopes some of you will want to get involved. The ideas surrounding this campaign are wide ranging and there is potential for involvement at many levels. One immediate opportunity worth mentioning is that Just Food has a table for Earth Week events happening at Grand Central Station this weekend, and they are looking for volunteers to work shifts at the table. I will be doing a shift on Saturday, so even if you can't work a shift, please come by and say hello if you happen to be in the area. Included below I have included some information for the person to contact at Just Food if you are interested in joining the Pollination Week committee or just want additional information about these happenings.

You can email me with questions, but it honestly might be a few days before i can respond as I have about thirty thousand lady friends arriving tomorrow and preparing for their accommodations has my hands quite full at the moment.

Keepin the buzz alive,

Just Food contact : Jacquie Berger is the primary contact on Pollinator Week activities and organization at the moment, if you want to be involved, she is the person to contact - Her email is [address removed] - Just Food's website which provides general information about their organization and about their legalization activities. You can also sign the Petition to Legalize beekeeping on their site if you have not already done so.
