BTW, don't want to be totally negative here.

This group went from dead to completely awesome overnight, and it is clear that Garrett is solely responsible for that!  So if you don't hear it enough Garrett, thanks for putting in the crazy amount of work you do to make this thing rock!

Agreed,  this group started as a group of people who like to cycle in the city and to eat food.  Now you can't do that if you ride a recumbent, use electric assist (sorry for those of you who actually might need it), don't have "standard sized" wheels (huh?), don't wear a helmet (not a law in NYC last I checked), and don't have a bell (useless).  What a seriously bizarre set of rules?

Most Americans do NOT have a lawyer on retainer (sorry Erik, I think you are watching too much Law and Order.  :)) and even most small business do not have this much legalese attached to them.  This is a community group, not a government organization.

My advice, lay off the lawyer talk.  It seriously is very off-putting, and seems to have very little to actually do w/ riding a bike or eating.

Hello there: i signed up for your group some time ago but have not made it to any rides as most of them seem to originate in brooklyn, which i don't, and those whose origins are closer to where i am (when in nyc) have just not been on days when i could make it, unfortunately...that notwithstanding, i have followed the meetup ideas with interest and a little envy (of those i want to go on but haven't made it) but recently, i have noticed a kind of draconian tilt to the various messages, including this latest, which is somewhat intimidating/off-putting...i say this as someone who has not been to any events, and thus perhaps could offer the perspective of a prospective or new member...i feel somehow that when i finally do make it to an event, i will have to go through security, an emissions (or is it omissions) inspection, and then someone will examine my fingernails and teeth, see if i have washed behind my ears, have accepted jesus and am wearing appropriate underwear...

i would like to suggest that, from the vantage point of someone who also lives in another country where strip-searches are not de rigeur for entrance into an apartment building or two pieces of ID needed to get into the dentist's office (the latter is really true in my case in NYC), "liability" should not be life's modus operendi, or in other words.."lighten up" eh?:)

That notwithstanding, i have never been a member of the Nazi party..i have lived in argentina all my life...does that help?
I must admit to riding a bicycle that has NO brakes on the frame, just the two on my legs, so mea culpa, mea maxima culpa

i have not read your FAQ's because i dont know how to get to them, but i would be delighted to, provided that i do not need to consult a solicitor in order to interpret them, as unlike most americans, i do not have one on permanent retainer.. i promise not to bite, spit on the floor or to make gurgling sounds while eating...E.K.

Dear Members -

We have had an open membership admission policy, meaning anybody can sign up without organizer approval, and we would like to keep it that way. All new members after April are required to fill out all fields in their membership profile and indicate that they have read group FAQ and will abide by group rules before they can join (meaning no one can sign up without doing so any more, period). Obviously not the case of long time members who are already signed up. So in the interest of fairness, I ask all members to revisit your membership profile, fill out all the fields, especially the one to indicate that you have read group FAQ and will abide by rules.

The rules are there because of the tiny 1% who are either oblivious or in willful disregard of common sense. So, as an organizer, I can simply remove these members, or try to hammer in the points to everyone to follow the rules, including the 99% of our members who already do honorably and innately, in the hope that the troublesome 1% may see the light and co-exist with 99% of our wonderful members. I have been doing the latter. So I apologize to long time active members who must be wondering why the sudden strict atmosphere of the group. I want to assure you that nothing has changed as far as they are concerned, just the # of us has grown much larger, and with that comes need for clearer understanding and better communication. Consider it growing pains. But we will always be the fun and loose group we always have been, and the rules are laid out in clear letters now to insure that. Any questions or problems, please feel free to talk to me. Thanks.
