Fee: $5 (Dinner & Drink Provided. This event used to be free, however no-shows deprived the participation opportunities of people who were on the waiting list and caused food over-ordering. If you have difficulty to pay, please email the organizers.)
O'Reilly will be raffling off two free passes to the Strata Conference as well. Details of the conference below.
Speaker: Conrad Benham, cyrusinnovation.com
It is claimed that Rails is Agile, that it honors the items mentioned in the Agile Manifesto. What does this mean? What exactly is "Agile" and how does it relate to Extreme Programming (XP)? Software development is difficult. Rails, Agile and XP are meant to help ease the pain. But how? These are some questions that will be answered in the next session at NYC on Rails.
Without the proper devotion to quality, web applications quickly become difficult to maintain. They suffer from technical debt and eventually lose the original velocity of productivity. We will look at some of the tricks that XP developers employ to reduce and eliminate the risk of this happening. Specifically, the session will focus on the tools, rules and techniques that developers can use to meet this goal. During the evening we will look at the code of a website built using Agile, XP and most importantly Rails.
Conrad Benham works at Cyrus Innovation as a Senior Agile Developer where he applies his knowledge of Rails, Agile and XP on a daily basis. He has worked as a consultant for the past 7 years with experience spanning the banking, retail, online auction and airline industries. Before becoming a consultant he started his career as a Software Engineer for 3 years at domain name registrar Melbourne IT where he helped build a high performance domain name registration system. As an Australian, Conrad has worked in Australia, Hong Kong and the USA. It was while working in Hong Kong that he started a now dormant group called Agile Hong Kong. As a result of this experience, Conrad has worked in a number of teams of varying size using various languages, technologies and flavors of Agile/XP. This experience has afforded him a diverse breadth of Rails and Agile/XP experience.
Infogroup is offering some amazing referral benefits to this group and it's members if you can help them find a ruby developer. I've posted details about the program, so if you are that person or know someone, apply within.
