An Introduction to Lean UX

Designers operate today in a radically changed environment. New software platforms and practices allow teams to operate with greater speed and lower costs than ever before. As a result, we've seen the rise of approaches like Agile software development and Lean Startup. But these approaches create challenges for designers--often forcing us to rethink our working methods. So how can designers cope?

Lean UX is an approach that combines the best of User Experience, Design Thinking, Lean Startup and Agile software development to power collaboration on small teams of designers, developers and others. Using short cycles of small, inexpensive experiments, design teams "build, measure, learn" their way to success. Can these techniques apply in your world? An increasing number of designers believe the answer is yes.

If you're familiar with Lean UX, come hear about how these techniques are being used by designers working on product teams. If you've never heard of Lean UX, this great introduction will explain what it is and how you can use it to create meaningful learning, collaboration, and innovation on your projects.

Jeff Gothelf has spent a 14 year career as an interaction designer, Agile practitioner, user experience team leader and blogger. He is one of the leading voices on the topic of Agile UX and Lean UX. In addition, Jeff is author of the O'Reilly book, Lean UX: Getting Out of the Deliverables Business. He is a highly sought-after international speaker having presented at EuroIA, SXSW, IA Summit, Interaction (IxDA), London IA, the Agile conference and Startup Lessons Learned. Jeff has led cross-functional product design teams at TheLadders, Publicis Modem, WebTrends, Fidelity, AOL while maintaining a strong advisory and mentorship presence in the startup communities of New York City and Silicon Valley.

Josh Seiden has been creating great technology products for more than 20 years. Josh has worked as a designer in hardware and software, consumer and enterprise, mobile, web, and desktop. He is currently a Managing Director in Neo’s NYC office. Earlier, he was head of product design at Wall Street innovator Liquidnet, and lead pioneering interaction design teams at Cooper. He is a founder and past President of the Interaction Design Association.

ALL: Out of respect for our venue sponsor, AOL Ventures, we are asked to provide a list of RSVPs for security purposes. Their venue is large, but does have its limitations, and as such we do ask that all participants RSVP Yes to the meeting if you can attend, and No if you cannot. If we cannot comply with their simple request, we risk losing them as a sponsor. Thank you for your consideration.

We will open up more spots and announce that in a week or two, well before the meeting, so stay tuned. I also urge members who have RSVPed yes but cannot attend to please update your RSVP to "No" so that others may join us!
