As you may know, the override vote in New Jersey to ban cruel gestation crates is coming up on November 18th. The campaign is going into its final stage this weekend and they're trying to get as many folks as possible to come out to New Jersey to help out between now and Nov. 18.
Not only is winning this campaign important for the pigs in New Jersey who are locked in gestation crates, it's also a symbolic measure - it shows that our movement has the power to defeat factory farming and overturn a veto from one of the most powerful governors in the country. It would also bring the number of states that have banned gestation crates into double digits: 10.
So, here's the deal: every day until Nov. 18, activists are going door to door in key districts, asking residents to please call their legislator and urge them to vote "yes" on the vote to ban gestation crates. I've been told that nearly every resident says they will call, and takes the flier with the call info on it. Folks are door knocking from about 10am to 5pm, with a lunch break and several breaks for the bathroom, gas, snacks, etc. Also, people are going out door knocking in groups, so you'd always be with other people.
You can either go down for a full day (10am to 5pm), or go for multiple days and stay overnight in a big house that they have rented that many activists are staying at in Asbury Park, NJ. The Humane Society of the United States will pay for your transportation to and from NJ (gas money for your car, or bus or train ticket), and your food while you’re there.
If you’d like learn more about it and go, please email Kenny Torrella at [address removed]. And feel free to invite others – the more the merrier!
I'll be heading down this weekend and I hope to see some of you all there!
