Genetically Modified Foods: What's on the Menu for Business?

Twenty years ago food with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) first hit US groceries. Today 80-90% of all corn, alfalfa, and soybean crops are GMOs, while 70% of processed food contains them and most farm feed. [CBSAC/NY event]

In the US, only Connecticut and Maine have labeling laws. Most developed countries have had them for a decade. Studies are at odds on risks to human and environmental health from GMOs and current data remains inconclusive to really know. Meanwhile, several major food retailers now support voluntary labeling. Chipotle lists its GMO ingredients online and is trying to phase them out. Whole Foods announced all US and Canadian suppliers would label GMO ingredients by 2018. Tapping into the zeitgeist, General Mills launched non-GMO Cheerios and Post did the same with its Original Grape-Nuts. What does it all mean for business and consumers?
