First Tuesday at Dempsey's: Open Traditional Irish Seisiún with Martin O'Connell

OK, it's not really First Tuesday, it's Second Tuesday, but I'm making an exception in this case because Martin O'Connell, the world-class and All-Ireland champion button accordion player is going back to Ireland soon and this will be his last official guest appearance at the Dempsey's session.

Martin, a Kerry native, placed first in the senior division in button accordion at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Cavan last August. He also won a gold medal at the 2011 All-Ireland Accordion Festival in Meath. He's played in traveling Irish music shows and taught button box workshops all over the world. So this figures to be an amazing night of tunes at Dempsey's and your last chance to hear Martin in the unique Dempsey's session environment for a while.

The Dempsey's session is the longest-running open traditional Irish session in New York, now in its 15th year of Tuesday night tunes and craic. All are welcome, from beginners to intermediate to advanced session musicians and the session is a good mix of all three. Sean nos and ballad singers and folk musicians are welcome as well as the session uses a round-robin format where everyone gets a turn to start a tune or sing a song.

The welcoming, open spirit of Dempsey's is known in Irish music circles all over the world and it's not unusual at all for visiting musicians (or singers, or dancers) from the four corners of the earth to stop by for a tune on any given Tuesday night. In 2011, local indie filmmaker Paradox Smoke Productions even made a documentary about the Dempsey's session called "Beautiful People."

For musicians, the session provides a friendly, supportive atmosphere to share your talents and develop your skills. For non-musicians, the session creates an atmosphere of Irish conviviality and craic that few local pubs can match.

Meetup starts at 7 for drinks, food and conversation, the music starts at 8.

Great music! About 30 musicians joined in the session, incredible! I enjoyed the friendliness and good atmosphere.

NEVER a cover charge at Dempsey's on Tuesday nights, or for any other local session that I'm aware of. The food is Irish pub fare but is pretty good. Sliders, sweet potato fries, mac-and-cheese, chicken tenders, chicken quesadillas, nachos, triple-decker grilled-cheese sandwiches are all popular choices, plus they have fish-and-chips, bangers-and-mash, burgers, cheese steaks, full Irish breakfast, etc.

I'm not Irish, but I love Celtic music, and
might even try to sing a song.
