It's First Tuesday once again, so join us at Dempsey's in the East Village for their open traditional Irish session.
An update to the schedule this week: Liz Hanley has been added as guest musician on fiddle and vocals. And WPKN-89.5 FM will be recording the session for a future broadcast.
This session is the longest-running open traditional Irish session in New York, now in its 16th year of Tuesday night tunes and craic. All are welcome, from beginners to intermediate to advanced session musicians and the session is a good mix of all three. Sean nos and ballad singers and folk musicians are welcome as well as the session uses a round-robin format where everyone gets a turn to start a tune or sing a song.
The welcoming, open spirit of Dempsey's is known in Irish music circles all over the world and it's not unusual at all for visiting musicians (or singers, or dancers) from the four corners of the earth to stop by for a tune on any given Tuesday night. In 2011, local indie filmmaker Paradox Smoke Productions even made a documentary about the Dempsey's session called "Beautiful People."
For musicians, the session provides a friendly, supportive atmosphere to share your talents and develop your skills. For non-musicians, the session creates an atmosphere of Irish conviviality and craic that few local pubs can match.
Another important note about this meetup: This will be Colin's LAST ever night behind the bar at Dempsey's. He'll still be working with Tom O'Byrne's group of pubs going forward, but more in a front-office role, not day-to-day bartending and management. Colin's been at Dempsey's for the past 9 years, was behind the bar at our very first meetup in March 2007 and at just about every other meetup at Dempsey's ever since so come out and get served by him one last time and wish him well as he transitions into this new phase of his career.
Meetup starts at 7 for drinks, food and conversation, the music starts at 8. Be there!
