Just Jobs: An Introduction to Worker Cooperatives

How do we create our own jobs? Join Sonia Pichardo, of GEO Collective, and representatives from Cooperative Home Care Associates, Beyond Care, and Si Se Puede to learn more about how a worker cooperative works and how to start one. Sonia will provide an overview of the basics of worker cooperatives—what they are, how they work, and where they came from—followed by stories about the operations and experiences of existing NYC worker cooperatives. We’ll also have plenty of time for discussion and questions. The program starts at 7PM but join us for snacks and conversation with each other and coop members from 6:30-7PM. The event is co-sponsored by GEO (Grassroots Economic Organizing) Collective, Solidarity NYC and the NYC Worker Cooperative Network. Childcare and Spanish translation services will be provided.

Great introduction to various cooperative models and various resources for worker cooperatives. The small group discussions with actual worker-owners from various cooperatives was a plus, and the large group processing drew out significant questions of scale-ability, tax implications, etc.

Very good presentation, good information. Break out sessions distracting.

It was okay but not great. The speaker was at a loss for words many times.
Many participants were touted as members of a collective but when we spoke to them, it was clear that they were not.
Lots of questions were left unanswered. One good part was that a second meeting will be held to try to answer questions.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
