Introduction

Claudia Joseph, a permaculture teacher, consultant and gardener in Park Slope, BK, is developing useful public models, at a community garden, a park and a middle school. She lives with her husband, composer Dan Joseph and their daughter Cassandra.

How did you become interested in permaculture?

I have taken 2, more would be really fun. I have taught at BBG, NYBG and the NY Open Center, in CA at the Berkely Ecology Center, Common Ground, a permaculture course at Merritt College and more.

If you have taken a Permaculture Design Course, who was your was your teacher and what year did you receive your certification?

Yes: the Garden of Union, The Old Stone House and MS 51. They have large compost systems and fruitful landscapes. GOU is the only communally operated community garden in NYC. Working in public has certain challenges and lots of rewards. We design social systems as well as plant communities. I accept community feedback and work with others to make a landscape that serves many needs. There are always people to talk with as I work, and lots of super nice volunteers come to help. My family owns a farm in Virginia. I grew up on land and then spent time in California both in the desert and in the Bay area. I learned permaculture there and it is oh so popular, now. Seeing that model of so many people applying permaculture thinking to their work inspired me to make permaculture an every day practice.

How are you currently applying the permaculture principles in your life? (Care of people and the earth, fair distribution of surplus, promotion of diversity, cooperation, integration, zero waste, etc.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permaculture)

What are some of your favorite permaculture resources? (Books, videos, websites, etc.)

We have a permaculture guild in Park Slope that meets once a month and presents two festival events each year. Stronger community networks in NYC would be a benefit. I see other cities have a guild in every neighborhood and I would like to see that develop here. I was part of the Washington DC punk - DIY movement; communal living has always appealed to me.

What are some aspects of life in New York that you would like to see the group address from a permaculture perspective? (For example: land use patterns, the banking and healthcare systems, transportation, housing, community development, food, waste

I hold 2 certificates (1996 & 1998) and was awarded a Diploma by Permaculture USA in 2004 for work completed at The Oakland Botanical Demonstration Gardens. The Occidental Arts and Ecology Center PDC with Brock Dolman and Penny Livingston was an amazing experience that put me on a path right away. Before that I had studied bio-intensive and bio-dynamic gardening as well as reading Masanobu Fukuoka. I went to the Bioneers Conference several years in a row. When I finally got to permaculture it was an easy fit and I started applying the principles immediately.

What Claudia Joseph is saying about this Meetup Group

What a great group! Getting better all the time. Many people who RSVP do not attend and many who do not RSVP show up.
