I graduated from the PDC sponosored by Green Phoenix in 2007 taught by Geoff Lawton and another taught by Andrew Faust in 2011. I've been facilitating the Imani community garden in Crown Heights, Brooklyn since 2008.
I was attending a meeting of a group that was the pre-cursor to Green Phoenix Permaculture. Someone, I believe it was Sean Maley, mentioned this new movement called permaculture that he'd just heard about. After some discussion, we decided to rename our group to its current name and change its mission to focus on permaculture education and demonstration.

I'm facilitating a set of community gardens in Crown Heights called Imani Garden. These are two gardens, one at 87-91 Schenectady Ave and 1680 Pacific Street. We have built a variety of permaculture inspired projects at these gardens including a chicken coop, a chicken run, a solar powered aquaponic system, a greenhouse, 13 raised beds and two water storage systems. We've also created a set of by-laws to ensure that the garden is governed in a manner consistent with permaculture principles. If you'd like to find out more about Imani, please go to www.green-phoenix.org. I'm also working on starting two businesses: an edible yard landscaping company and a community carting and composting business.
I'm a big fan of Starhawk who has written a guide to living in community employing permaculture principles. She also has written "The Fifth Sacred Thing", a novel about a post apocalyptic world centered in northern California. Geoff Lawton has a host of videos on Youtube as do other permies such as Toby Hemenway, Peter Bane, Andrew Faust and Mark Shepherd.
Food waste, composting, solar energy, edible yards among others. A group of like-minded souls have started a group that meets monthly at Brooklyn Borough Hall to discuss how we can increase the levels of community composting in NYC. If you're interested in joining, send me a message.
It's a great way to meet your neighbors and find other gardening enthusiasts. And then there's all of those free vegetables.
Hi Greg, All of our members can post info on the Message Board, place events on the calendar, and/or enter suggested Meetups. Please go ahead and post the info for the North East Permaculture Convergence.
Hi Greg, l'm visiting and helping my sister with her daughter here in NY and l want to learn more about permaculture. I'm from Mexico and l have a ranch wiht plenty of space for a design. I took a course there but l haven't done much, so a PDC will be great for me . I'll be here till dec. 10th. I have some time off in the mornings and sundays. We live in Roosevelt island. How can i help? Regards, Elisa

Hi Greg, I met a really interesting woman at a green mixer the other night and thought you two should know each other...she is starting a non-profit to educate and encourage restaurants to go greener...I mentioned that you are really interesting in starting bike pick-up composting here in the city...I think you might be able to help each other some how...let me know and I will make the intro. Claudia from your PDC class with Andrew
Well, meeting you somewhere is not as much of a problem as getting home from there with all that compost... =/ It's ok if it doesn't work for you. Thanks anyway!
You wouldn't happen to be picking people up in Manhattan to go to the Compost Giveback tomorrow, would you?
Every day off I have, I am in my green house busy multiplying my plants. it's not much, but it's going.
