How did you become interested in permaculture?

Disillusionment with my chosen profession of landscape architecture lead me down a path of natural discovery and I met some amazing people in Central Florida that where practicing and teaching permaculture. I began working/volunteering with the Simple Living Institute in 2007 and continued my path of discovery after moving to NYC in 2010.

If you have taken a Permaculture Design Course, who was your was your teacher and what year did you receive your certification?

I studied under Tia and Terry Meer in Central Florida before moving to NYC and getting my PDC from Andrew Faust in 2011.

How are you currently applying the permaculture principles in your life? (Care of people and the earth, fair distribution of surplus, promotion of diversity, cooperation, integration, zero waste, etc.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permaculture)

I incorporate these principles in my work at Smiling Hogshead Ranch http://smiling-hogshead-ranch.tumblr.com/ As well as my work at the Queens Library where I teach about many topics including gardening, environmental science and Eco-literacy to kids, teens and adults. Skillshare http://www.skillshare.com/profile/Gil-Lopez/5033827

What are some of your favorite permaculture resources? (Books, videos, websites, etc.)

I like this meetup as well as Green New Yorkers.

What are some aspects of life in New York that you would like to see the group address from a permaculture perspective? (For example: land use patterns, the banking and healthcare systems, transportation, housing, community development, food, waste

I'd like to see the permi community rise up and reclaim Composting as a community effort before it gets completely handed over to corporate contractors.

Introduction

I'm a landscape designer/builder, environmental educator and urban farmer. I help run Smiling Hogshead Ranch in LIC, Queens, work for the Queens Library as an environmental educator

What Gil L. is saying about this Meetup Group

Good people free food and a drink ticket, good info on the FarmROOTS program from GrowNYC. I'm really glad I went!
