Sustainable JC presents a series of nine workshops that introduce participants to the concepts and practices of urban sustainability.  This nine session series cumulatively linked to a Certificate in Urban Sustainability In Jersey City
(1)  Telling the Natural Step  (Ashwani Vasishth) – April 1st: 6:30-8:30 PM
·       Sustainability: Step by Natural Step
o   Systems Thinking
o   Basic Science
o   Strategic Planning and the Natural Step Approach
This module will present the Natural Step’s Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development.  Students will enroll <  in an on-line course in preparation for this module (add’l $45 discounted rate / 3 hours)
(2)  Sustainability Planning In Jersey City (Ashwani Vasishth)  -- April 8th: 6:30-8:30 PM
o   The Sustainable Jersey Program
o   Community Planning in Jersey City
o   Case Studies of Other Urban Centers
This module will lay out the structures that shape urban sustainability planning within the Jersey City context.
(3)  Applications to Urban Ecology (Ashwani Vasishth)  -- April 15th: 6:30-8:30 PM
o   Energy Efficiency and Water Conservation Opportunities
o   Recycling, Composting and Waste Management
o   Food Systems
o   Transportation and Land Use Planning
o   Green Infrastructure and Green Buildings
o   Arts, Culture & Historic Preservation
This module will present specific actions that can be taken to help move an urban area closer to its sustainable development framework

In this session we will work with a simulated case study to apply what we have learned to date in the series, and to reflect on what we need to know and what we need to be able to do in order to make the shift toward a sustainable Jersey City.
In this session we will learn how to distinguish problems from symptoms and design win win win solutions that will accelerate the shift toward a sustainable Jersey City.
·       MEASURING OUR WAY TO THE FUTURE WE WANT, May 20th: 6:30-8:30 PM
In this session we will design tools to measure our way to the results we want.  We will consider the following questions:  What are the results we want? What will success look like? How will we know if we are moving in the right direction?
