Call for Proposals: Promoting Resilience of the Region through Innovative Planning and Design

The federal Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force recently launched a new challenge for our region: Rebuild by Design.  Requesting qualifications from diverse, multi-stakeholder teams, the Rebuild By Design competition is intended to inspire innovative planning and design approaches to building resilience in the Sandy-impacted region.  Pioneering in its approach, selected teams will undergo several months of research to analyze the region’s vulnerabilities before developing key projects for impacting its resilience, with substantial community engagement throughout the process.  Final project designs will be implemented with Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery funding (CDBG-DR), overseen by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

MAS encourages members, groups, organizations and others to develop or join comprehensive and innovative teams, submitting their qualifications for consideration, to develop holistic and “outside-the-box” approaches to bolster our region’s resilience.  MAS is working with our partners – including HUD, The Rockefeller Foundation, Van Alen Institute, Regional Plan Association, and NYU’s Institute for Public Knowledge – to support the Rebuild by Design Competition process and engage diverse stakeholders across the region throughout the process.

The deadline to respond to the Request for Qualifications is July 19, 2013.  Multi-disciplinary teams must pick a focus in one of these four key areas:

  • Coastal Communities
  • High Density Urban Environments
  • Ecological and Waterbody Networks
  • Unidentified and Unexpected (which allows for innovative proposals outside the framework provided)

Expertise is required in at least three of the following fields: infrastructure engineering, landscape design, urban design, architecture, land use planning, community development, communications design, public finance, or real estate.  Interdisciplinary and inventive teams are encouraged!  Join the competition to participate meaningfully in building the economic, social, cultural, and environmental resilience of our region.
