The end of summer is fast approaching, and I hope that you enjoy the last bit of it over this long holiday weekend! I thought I'd take this opportunity to do a little housecleaning for you as well.
First of all, I'd like to welcome all the new members to the group. I hope to meet you all soon at a coming event--with so many on the calendar, that's bound to happen sooner or later! Secondly, I'd like to thank all the old members for their continued dedication, and especially those that have stepped up to organize events. We have a huge variety of activities on the calendar, and it's thanks to all of you! If you are new to the group and would like to advertise an event, just let us know, and you can become and organizer too!
Now, I'd like to draw your attention to some changes that have been made to the site. I have updated the PROFILE QUESTIONS. Please answer them. A good profile is part of community-building: it helps us to get to know each other, find teachers, and find potential partners for projects. Please also consider adding a PROFILE PICTURE. It's rather lonely to go to an event that has 25 RSVPs, but only 3 have pictures, so you don't know who your looking for and where the group is in the crowd. If you really are shy about putting your face up, consider an artistic picture with sunglasses, or your favorite plant/animal/insect in front of your face. Finally, I have cleaned up the DISCUSSION FORUM. There are now categories to better manage the information flow and keep common questions and answers in an easily searchable format: Defining Permaculture; Courses & Workshops; Mutual Aid (Co-housing, Skill Share); Recommended Reading; Calls to Action…etc.
There's not much there yet, but I hope more of you will start using the Discussion Forum in the future--instead of using the mailing list. This way, all your important events will be saved in a place where they can be found again by future members; and people who have comments, will only send messages to those interested, rather than the whole group.
Finally, I would like to invite you all to the Monthly Meeting on Tuesday. This Tuesday's topic will be building community. The talk with Geoff Lawton really amazed us with some of the high-tech ways he's been working to build an international permaculture community, but also with the successes that small, local, communities have had in changing the area around them. I think it would be really nice to hear more of those stories. Do you know of any successful community actions, or do you have an action you'd like to take? Please share it with us on Tuesday! We'll also talk about ways to build community, and how stronger communities can help with resilience in times of economic crisis or when dealing with the effects of natural disasters. I hope to see you all there!
