Sorry I couldn't make it... my companion didn't have her proper ID, and I couldn't just leave her stranded... -_-

    How was it though?

Hey... I want to come, but I'm a little confused too. Is this a club / party / social event? Or is this for shooting pictures? Is there a dress code? Also, I'm a tremendous newbie, so will I be able to use my camera's built in flash, or will that disturb others / the models? Finally, I'm kinda shy, so will there be friendly, welcoming people there? =D

What is the suggested medium for lighting? I need to go to adorama today.

Well you can't really use anything that plugs in so no strobes, kinkos, ect. Limited to speedlights or video type LED's - but I would strongly suggest not using LED's as they throw too much constant light for other photographers. Just make sure the speedlight can swivel and rotate for best use. Power output and recycle time will vary depending on your ISO, aperture and focal length but it's nothing I would worry about. Some people like to use light modifiers, e.g. mini soft boxes, tupperware, ect.

Some good books to start with are: "The Art of Photography", "Within The Frame", and "Creative Black & White", to name a few. Tons of resources available online as well.

For anyone coming for the first time: Once you get past the coat check and up the elevator to the penthouse level you're at the space. It has 2 levels. The 1st level is mainly a bar area with some seating. Take the stairs on the right side up to the 2nd level - there's a great cityscape vantage point going up the stairs, east looking at the NYTimes building and north. There's another bar, seating and DJ space up there.

    For shooters:
Ambient lighting is very low with mainly CFC-type lamps on the side. You'll definitely need your own light source. The ceiling is a semi-transparent off white material that's about 10 to 11 feet high. Can be bounce flashed, although on nice nights they'll slide parts of it off so it will be open sky. Lines of sight are very tight. If you have a 24-70 lens, or similar, it probably would be best. A[masked] is useful in the lower end for 3/4's and close ups - for full size sensor, use equivalents for cropped sensors. Hope to see everyone there.
