Good thinking, running after money just isn't right...

I actually in the same situation as you, I work for a news organization, I'm pretty sure I could be getting almost double that what I'm getting now but I like to work there.

I'm pretty sure I'll be done with them soon, it's one website and it's been like 6-7 I believe so sooner or later I'll have to find something else, oh well...

I do LOVE the environment, sounds just about the same as yours!

I think experience is VERY important, the more time passes by the more I know. I've been messing around with computer since the age of 9 (private teacher). This is the reason why I love the technology world, there's ALWAYS something new to learn and/or invent!

You can't be a good developer without experience, there's just no such thing... you can be good-for-a-"noob" not but you can't be just-good or really-good.

And yet, some people with experience would be able to solve bugs or write code to avoid those bugs even though they would be (lets say) bad programmers (but yes, there are many experienced-bad programmers but most aren't).

Thank you,
Sam IT

In my experience, experience means nothing.  You can have 20 years of experience writing bad code and all you are is a very experienced but horrible developer.

So as for salary... I'm not getting quite what he's asking for, but I'm happy with what I *am* getting.

Challenge?  Definitely.  We write many different types of sites for many different needs.  Again, I'm very pleased with the quality of the tasks I am given.

Environment?  Totally.  Fairly flexible hours, wide open space where all the developers have total access to eachother, and internet that is not blocked in any way.

All in all, I would like to be paid better, but I wouldn't trade this job for a 10 or 15% salary hike.  maybe 20, but I'm morally obligated to these guys until at least thanksgiving... so not before then :-)

Jason,

I agree, you really do get what you pay for... Not only that you would get better professionals, they would also give everything they have if they are happy.

What usually makes people happy is salary, challenge (who would want to be bored at work?) and work environment.

Thank you,
Sam IT

You get what you pay for... good developers are in demand right now.    Tell your CEO he better get used to those prices :)

Just my 2 cents ;)

Sam,
Lol!  The guy sitting in the desk next to me is actually doing that right now :-)
In hebrew we have a very apt expression; The shoemaker usually walks barefoot.
We've just been swamped with work for so long that we haven't had a chance to update it.
The last person to actually touch the code was me... roughly 5 years ago.
Thanks for the constructive criticism!

Leroy,

Tell your boss your website needs a redesign ASAP (no offense).

Thank you,

I'll have a look.
I work for Avatar New York (www.avatarnewyork.com)
We aren't actively seeking a developer right now, but we may need one in the relatively near future.
His compensation is probably a little high as well, but it doesn't hurt to check anyway right?

Thanks,
Leroy
