I think it better to simply say that one shouldn't do work with the expectation of some compensation without a specific prior agreement as to the what, when, and how much. There are plenty of reasonable situations where one might _not_ expect compensation, and think it's perhaps a bit presumptuous to tell others how to make that choice. The takeaway should be a reminder to read (and/or write) the fine print, and keep in mind that you _are_ making a choice, don't let it be made for you by not paying attention.
