Fort Totten Park is one of those lesser known locations that hide a wealth of hidden history and culture from the City's past. Located in Northern Queens, Fort Totten is a former Army installation that's been converted into sprawling parkland. Many of the Civil War Era structures and facilities are still standing, in varying states of repair, and open to public exploration. The park also overlooks the Long Island Sound, with nature trails and a great view of the Throgg's Neck Bridge.
It's a bit of a way from some areas, but the trip itself is straightforward. It's about a 40 minute bus ride from Flushing on the Q16 bus. You can catch the Q16 on 39th Ave between Main and Union Streets, just a few blocks from the last stop on the 7 train. It's the first to last stop on the Q16, so no worries about figuring out where to get off. I'll be leaving Flushing at 11:30am, we can all go together if you're in the area by then.
Check it out!
