Just why does the sword wielding Sulu become Capt of the excalibur and the Russian guy become commander-in-chief of the federation? I mean they broke as many rules as anyone else!

Because they demonstrated a sense of loyalty to the ideal of cooperation of a multicultural environment. The rules broken were lower in meaning than the higher rules of ethical and moral concern for society.

Did you ever notice...

…that despite the hatred almost everyone has for the first Trek movie, the themes show were used to explore the Borg, Seven of Nine, Data's development, and even the progression of the Doctor in Voyager. The conceptual exploration shows continuity.

I got into Trek because...

…the philosophy of asking questions about how we deal with other people who are different helped to pave the wave for a brighter future.

As a SF writer and fan, I believe that Roddenbury's work influences our world today. The aspect of communication being needed to solve problems is a cornerstone of the Obama admnistration. Fiction helps us all to live long and prosper.
