Geek Phun

What happens when history and PHP meet up? This presentation will discuss the history of a popular PHP script as well as bring it up to speed utilizing PHP5 features. This topic includes a discussion of refactoring, caching, XML, parsing techniques, regular expressions and object oriented coding as well as dynamic image generation using PHP and GD. Rounding out this bit of geek phun are references to popular fantasy and science fiction characters.


Sharon has been working with Open Source technologies since the dot-com boom. For, she scripted a "Star Wars" quiz which received high acclaim from Salon.

Her skillset includes Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl and PHP. She has provided solutions to companies in a range of industries from avionics to e-commerce as well as webhosting and advertising.

Sharon is also webmaster for, which merited being qualified by Cornell University's ILR School for inclusion in the search engine of Human Resource Executive Online(R)

She is a member of UUASC, LAMPsig, linuxchixla and phpwomen

As a PHP evangelist since two major versions ago, she has touted its merits to UUASC and continues to do so as a speaker for the Southern California Code Camp. Last month, she presented at the pre-event WIOS of SCALE "PHP and JavaScript: An Intro."

After attaining a bachelor's degree from UCLA, she earned a certificate in C/UNIX from UCLA Extension. Other distinctions include having been published in php | Architect ("Email Verification" - June 2008). This past Fall, Sharon became one of the very few women in the world who is a Zend Certified Engineer in PHP5.
