Newbie Clinic and Workshop at Premier Music

Thanks to Mark Wein and Premiere Music for hosting this event. There's been a lot of discussion lately about providing more help for new players, so we reached out to Mark for assistance and he graciously offered to host this event. Here is the planned agenda for the clinic:

12 and 8 bar blues progressions.
Shuffle (jimmy Reed style)
box shuffle, Boogaloo
latin feels
top and bottom guitar parts for every feel
intros and endings
Stage etiquette (solos, taking leadership and cues, volume discipline, etc)

Each of the guitarists will get a packet with all of the pertinent information exerpted from my book  "Expanded Blues Guitar": http://www.lulu.com/shop/mark-wein/expanded-blues-guitar/paperback/product-21419934.html

Tommy Harkenrider may also sit in and help Mark with the clinic.

This is not just for guitarists, there will be support provided for bass & drums as well, so please don't hesitate to sign up.

Respectfully - a little observation addressed to the participants: Towards the end of the clinic a couple of us got carried away practicing on their unplugged guitars, completely unrelated to and totally on top of ongoing conversation with Tom and Mark. Maybe that was not the best time to practice, from the standpoint of respect and consideration for other musicians. Kinda same principles as during the jam :)

I'll be honest and say that the "noodle factor" is in effect any time you get amateur musicians in a room together for the first time. It is just human nature to want to play the instrument in your hands and they just don't realize how loud and distracting it can be until someone makes mention of it.In our classes it is one of the first things we need to address since it becomes impossible to even talk above the din while everyone is playing.

Those of you who got a lot out of the clinic should look into lessons and performance classes offered by Premier. The amount of material that can be covered in a clinic setting is miniscule compared to what they can cover in a private lesson or in a performance class with a small number of students who make up a band. I highly recommend the performance classes because the only way to learn to play with other musicians is to play with other musicians. What was covered in the clinic is probably less than what would be covered in a single lesson or class.

The clinic went really well yesterday/ Lot's of very good information given out that I found very helpful. And I think everyone got a chance to plug in and try out some of the things discussed. The time went quick, it was so packed full of things to take in the time flew by and before I knew it it was past time to go. Thanks again to Mark and Tommy for hosting us and doing all the work, it's very much appreciated.

I just wanted to say thanks; I've only recently gotten back into playing after a LONG hiatus, and I've been too self-conscious to get up on stage at the jams. This may be just what I need.

    Looking forward to it.

It looks like we'll have a pretty decent turnout for tomorrow. I hope you all that have RSVP'd will be able to make it, it should be a real good clinic.

If you're thinking of attending, but haven't made up your mind yet, or are just procrastinating, please do sign up, so Mark can get a good idea of how many to plan for.

Thanks, and see you all tomorrow!

      February 14, 2014

    • Mark W.

Well, I don't have anything specific to offer you for your instrument but there will be a ton of useful information regarding forms, chord progressions and other stuff that you might find useful.
