Great jam. Nice job Tee! If I can knit-pick about one thing ;) the vocals *really* needed to come up at this jam. It's tough trying to sing when you can't hear yourself and even out in the audience the vocals sounded muffled and weak to me. But I don't know how much control we have over that system since it's property of the venue's.

    November 24, 2012

    • joe t.

The PA was in fact a bit low, but also, the equalization was not good, very muffled as Jim mentioned. If the Cantina will let me, I can adjust it so we don't need too much volume, but the vocals will be crisp & clear as they should be

How do they do it on weekends ? That's a pretty loud lookin pa there w/4 speakers in the room. Just wonder if they turn it up for the college kids on fri and sat nights. On the other side, there are some players who don't, or won't change their vol while playing. They play at the same vol whether they're playin rythum, or solo'n. Then there's the bad cat, boogie amps. Thought y'all didn't want powerfull amps at Cantina. Just sayin

I want to thank all the back line pals who really made this the best ever, Cantina Jam. I appreciate the days success with a bit of mixed feelings. The performances were strong and incredible by our regulars and the newbies. An overall mix of talent and excitement blended with camaraderie and good times. Once again those few, turned up the volume and blasted their egos on stage, which dampened the enjoyment of the many, especially those who visited for the first time. Perhaps the most concerning element to all the organizers present, was the disrespect of not responding to the many requests of volume control. Continued disregard, especially at this venue, will eliminate Cantina as a third location for our jams. I was approached three times by the floor manager because of the volume. I'm sorry to have to post this, but we must act like a family and try to take care of each others back.
Thank you all for an incredible Jam.

Tony, Thanks for doing a great job. Sorry you had to take the heat from the management. In the 4 times I've been at the Cantina, I thought this time the sound was the best. Not only on stage, but I sat in the center at the bar most the afternoon and most the time I thought the levels were great (possibly due to some hearing loss?) I think Gil's elevated amp solved some of the problems with the bass. Had a blast as usual, and what a great turnout., Gene

Please note Rudy's comments. When I asked the guitar players on stage when I lead the set on bass to turn down from the very beginning, I was ignored also. Meanwhile I had the bass amp turned down to almost off, and I felt it was not too loud, there is a difference between volume and frequency. The bass general cuts through because it is the only instrument that plays in that frequency range. Very similar to the keyboard being played in the higher registers. I think we should have a mandatory class on jam etiquette and procedures for a half hour before the beginning of one jam a month, if anyone hasn't attended a class in the last 12 months, no jam for Sam!

In addition to our Blues Group there was an internet dating group meeting at the Cantina.
Elizabeth and Donna had a few guys buzzing around them.

Stuart...There is no play list per say...it's all pretty basic (I IV V) stuff...BB King, Clapton, Stevie Ray...and all the classic guys...Waters, Johnson, the other "Kings"...dig into your old records, or listen to a bunch of "best of" compilations...if you are leading a group and it takes longer than 30 seconds to explain the song structure, you probably shouldn't do the tune...shuffles, slow blues, that kind of thing, makes it easy on everybody and things keep moving...just remember it's a blues meet up group and jam...not rock, or pop...that's a whole other beast...most of the "old timers" have played about anything that can come up...hope to see you at Malone's...

    • joe t.

Hey Rudy, Did you get those guys phone numbers?

      November 26, 2012

  • Tony ".

I truly appreciate the important and valued feed back from those who I deeply respect and hold close as my music family. If you recall, up to this event I had always suggested wedges for the amps, as was encouraged by Richard back in August. I just forget to mention it this time around. It made sense to have the amps pointed in the ears of the players. Also, having only 15-20 watt amps (smallest) as the basic back line. As far as those returning blasters on stage, they are and continue to be the same ones over and over, at least in this venue. Even if they were first time over-the-top volumers, most didn't follow my request and I was in front of the stage more than once. The problem at the Cantina is the sound travels to bar then echoes to the rear of the house and re opens up into a cavern sound, again, loudly. This is where customers are eating with was the managers added concern. Just as Gil mentioned, I too tried talking to my brother and it was impossible!

    November 26, 2012

  • Nortic R.

This was my first time at an OCBP event and I was very impressed with everyone. I thought the vocalists and players were excellent. It can truly be very hard to keep the sound levels in check and hear yourself play. That is why performers find it necessary to wear headsets and run everything through the mixing board. As that is not possible for us, we should all try to stay in the musical background unless we are singing or soloing. I'm guessing Tony would appreciate some help from all of us in encouraging this type of restraint. Given the fact that it is difficult for musicians to appreciate that they are too loud when their sound is inaudible where they stand, this creates a dilemma. However, playing quietly, respecting others' turn to play and dialing the amps down from 11 tends to cure this nicely. I look forward to listening to and playing with all of you frequently in the years to come. Thanks for making me feel welcomed. -Barry

  • Stuart H.

Thanks to all the players for a great time! Thank you Tony for organizing the list, laying down a solid pocket, for staying on top of the volume and taking the heat for it, Richard for supplying a tuner and the trade off on guitar licks, Gil for solid bass, the info on how we all got there and the pictures, Brenda for the nice percussive groove, Carlos for playing strings and keys with his shades on, John for the use of great amp and all the blues lovers that showed up to support the players! See you soon.

I agree with Gil - as much as I like to crank it, let's keep the amp wattage down.

The Music did get too loud. I asked the band to turn down. The only one that actually turned down was Joe Fisher. So If Joe turned down you know it was loud. I can’t wait until the next one.

Hi there, I would love to attend your blues event. Don't know much about it, do you all play when you meet up? need to bring my mic? music? guitar? I play a few songs, but I'm really hoping to learn some blues licks and become better at playing the blues. Seems like a fun group!

    November 19, 2012

You don't have to stick to those songs, they are just suggestions. If you've already got a few tunes you like to do, that's fine.
