Occupy Together Hackathon!

This inspired Meetups in New York

Selected By: Andrew G.

Meetup HQ, 632 Broadway, 3rd Floor

New York, NY (map)

Selected by: Andrew G.

We stand together, so why can't we hack together? Come join us and help us to grow and expand the Occupy Wall St movement! The format is simple. We'll occupy Meetup HQ and hack on programming projects related to the movement, whether they be our own creations, improvements to Occupy Together's global hub and directory or banding together to knock out a task for the NYCGA or FLO/Internet Working group. Since our goal is to knock out new technology and modify existing solutions that need refinement, it'd be best if you come with laptop in tow and ready to write some code.

Members of the Meetup Everywhere API team will be there. Others that support us will be there. Will you be there? P.S. We'll be there all day, but we understand you might not be able to be. That's OK! Just come a bit later. We're going to wrap it up around 9PM -- Plenty of time to get something great done.

We've got a wiki on github (https://github.com/meetup/occupy-together-hackathon/wiki) feel free to share your ideas for things to work on.

EDIT: See http://occupyist.heroku.com, it's the most recent iteration of this project. I'll be linking twitter accounts to locations next.

EDIT 2: moved Occupyist to http://occupyist.org/. Twitter accounts, hashtags, and facebook events are parsing properly. I'll be making ongoing UI adjustments and thinking about an embeddable widget.

I saw this and I thought you'll should use Deja Mi, a crowd source photo app, to create a continuous photo stream of the events unfolding. You can continuously load photos up to a server that can be viewed by all. Set up an Occupy Event and the world can see what is going on. http://itunes.apple.com/us/...

Built OccupyVotes at the Meetup - A participatory decision making platform to answer "what do the protesters want" & map differences at each local protest. The project launched and has gotten 10,000 votes so far. Check it out and vote! http://www.allourideas.org/...

A few people have contacted us to find out about projects that were worked on at the hackathon. If you worked on anything, please add it to this github wiki page: https://github.com/meetup/oc...

I've submitted a legislation polling idea to the OccupyHack site; am cross posting here. http://twitter.com/#!/rabbi...]

It's only time till every word in every bill will be / will need to be / vetted by the public. The audience is the answer. Participatory-Transparency on bill-language on the way in can fix much of our finance-skewed political environment.

Made some decent progress on a wifi island microphone: https://github.com/n8han/sho...

Right now it just sends an existing mp3 on my phone but since it works (with the Ubuntu mp3 client Banshee, at least) there should be no other technical blocker to live-encoding mp3 from the microphone and writing that out instead.

If anybody wants to try out the android wifi microphone, I uploaded an apk: https://github.com/n8han/sho...

Should work on Android 2.x phones, and I tested it with itunes as well as the banshee player on linux. Wifi has to be on and connected to a network, otherwise it will probably just crash. It shows the url to connect to when it's open, just type that into a music player on the same wifi network and it should work.

It may be too late for this hackathon, but I hope that some people out there in hackland can work on a better website for the folks who are working on a new constitution. The current website is http://constitution.wikia.c...

Also, this hackathon is far from over despite the email you probably just received. That's just a presumptive email job.

We should as a movement concentrate on occupying the Pentagon and Wash. D.C. to End the Oil Wars that cost us 3 million dollars an hour. We just can not afford Business As Usual any longer! But most of all we must stop the global terrorism waged by U.S. Allied Military Industrial (fossil fuel/nuke) Complex Inc.

A guy in CUNY is attacked by radio weapon. The guy public his situation. But the radio weapon attackers collude with the City University of New York. The City University of New York called the 911 for Police and EMS to send the guy to the Emergency Room of the Bellevue Hospital and the guy was locked in the mental hospitals for two years. The City University of New York concocted the guy took off clothes and etc. Actually the guy did not do that.

Wish I could, but I can't make it to NY. Could you Live Stream? IRC? Love to assist.

    Posted by Ravenpaige M. October 12, 2011

A live stream would probably be quite boring, but an IRC channel could be useful. I've registered #hackupy on irc.freenode.net and will suggest we all idle in there. (I'll be in there today as well)

This is amazing -- I'm hopeful though that future events might possibly take into account the availability of the surely many talented and interested occupiers and future occupiers who are holding down 9-6,7,8s! On a less crazy weekend maybe.

This was discussed. Unfortunately, this was a busy weekend for many of us, and time is of the essence. As Doug said, please feel free to stop by and lend a hand later in the day. There are also two mailing lists that you can join http://flosolutions.org and http://nycga.cc/groups/comm... related to Internet/ Technology which you could use to get involved.
