Hang Gliding at Lookout Mountain

(I've gone hang gliding twice with the adventure group I was in when I lived in Augusta, we all loved it and I always enjoy sharing this experience. The weather is still nice right now, so we could go in January if it doesn't get too much colder, or we could save it for late February or March when it starts warming up again.) - Carley Leavitt,OCS member

PRICE:

$119- Discovery Tandem

Fly with a certified instructor pilot by your side for a birds eye view of beautiful Lookout Mountain. All tandem flights are towed to altitude by a special ultra-light aircraft. In-flight photos and DVD available. Fly to 1,800 feet for $119. Same person can do two flights for $249.00 and save $49.00 on your second flight (3000' = $199)

$249 (3000') or $199 (1800') - Introductory

This is our best, most popular one-day hang gliding experience. You will fly your first flights in a controlled environment, surfing the slopes of our small hills, only about 5 to 10 feet off the ground. You will get five opportunities to fly from our small hill with a certified instructor guiding you step by step. After your morning session you will fly tandem with an instructor by your side to an altitude of 1,800 feet or 3000 feet above beautiful Lookout Valley where you will build on your experience in learning to fly the glider. Mild exertion will be required. Ages 12 and up.

POSSIBLE PRICE:

Hang gliding with a group of around 10 people at Lookout Mountain will get us a nice group rate. You can check out the normal rates and info at www.hangglide.com. The discounted rate for just a tandem flight is $120, and the introductory flight experience (I highly recommend this one, especially if you want to learn how to actually hang glide) is $180.

What a great time. Pizza, beers and then a campfire before a night in the bunkhouse Friday, then some great aerial adventures in the sky on Saturday. We also did a waterfall hike at nearby Cloudland Canyons State Park. Too bad more club members couldn't make it.

Made my reservations today. I will be staying in the bunkhouse. I don't get off work until 3 on Friday, so I will head up there then. I suppose that I could meet you downtown. Also, I am planning on coming back right after hang gliding b/c I am going to my parents for Easter. Otherwise, I would love to go caving.

Not sure if its too late. Everyone have to call and RSVP on their own. So call and see if they still have spot open for that day. We are schedule for 11:15. But any time within an hour or so will work to. Let me know what they say. Also we are going caveing Sunday...if you interested :)

I really hate to do this, but I'm going to have to cancel my RSVP :(

My boyfriend won't be able to make the trip, and the package that I have with Lookout Mountain right now doesn't include any more tandem flights, so I wouldn't be with the group during my training hill time anyway. Very sorry I won't be going, but I hope you guys have a great time!

Doesn't look like I am going to be able to make it. :-(

Gregoryian, thanks for putting this together. However, my boyfriend and I will be doing the flight school, so we probably will still be busy with that when you guys are doing your tandem flights. But we'll still ride up with the caravan and we can hang out Friday night. Looking forward to a fun trip!

We should start solidifying plans for this and reserving our spots! Does everyone want to go up the day before? I can leave pretty much any time on Friday; we could carpool and spend some time in Chattanooga before tucking in for the night (getting to bed early is a good idea). Anyone need a ride? I'll have room for three other people in my car.

Also, where does everyone want to stay? You can look up accommodation options at www.hangglide.com (flight park -> accommodations). My boyfriend and I will probably be camping out (only $5 a night!). I would recommend sleeping somewhere at Lookout Mountain, as opposed to a hotel in Chattanooga, because you may need to be up early for your flight.

Maybe we should all meet up soon and discuss plans for this? We can figure out when everyone will be going, who's riding with whom, where everyone's staying, etc. I'll probably also try to see if I can get anyone outside the group interested in this so we can get a discount!

I am hoping to be able to do this.... just have to figure out what to do with my dog. I plan on going up there Friday afternoon/night and coming back Saturday. Anyone that wants to come back saturday is welcome to ride with me. I am definitely down for some camping. Carley, you should post this on the newbies sight...

This sounds fun! However, I have something to go to that night. Around what time would we be back?

    January 22

    • Carley Leavitt

Sorry for such a late reply, Emily. The drive there takes about 3 and a half to four hours, so the commute there and back alone is 7-8 hours. I wouldn't recommend going unless you're able to stay the night.

      February 11

    • Carley Leavitt

Sorry Emily, I misspoke. If you were interested in just doing a tandem flight, you could come back Saturday and be back by late afternoon I would think. I'm used to going up for a whole weekend and doing another event (like rafting) on Sunday. But if you go up Friday, I think it's certainly feasible to be back for your event.

They just released this video about a week long spring break deal they are offering. It shows some great footage of the fun to be had.

I've taken lessons before but its been a few years. Lookout Mtn is the #1 school on the east coast. Should be a great time.

  • Justin

I vote for the spring unless we have a miraculously warm January.... which may not be unusual for GA.

    December 17

  • Gregoryian

This will more than likely happen in Spring. Date pending...any suggestions?

    December 16

I am currently looking into this, stay tuned!
