I think both belong to the company since you were interacting on their behalf.  That said, personal relationships are definitely part of social engagement so I think that transitioning them into personal contacts are fine.  You can always go follow them with a new handle, say you'd connected in a "past life" and want to stay in touch on your personal or new professional account.

I'd have given the company the pw to the account and then set up a new one, inviting those you know to join.  Just my two cents...interested in what others think.

First thank you for taking the time to respond.  Here's the situation and question.  As an independent contractor I operated the @hansenssf handle and gained followers mostly by direct interaction with them at events in person but also by Twitter recommending the handle to those it deemed the target audience I was looking for.  The contract was ended and I decided to change the handle to @wommism.  I wanted to know if Hansen's HQ was entitled to the followers I accumulated and interacted with?  These interactions were not primarily based around Hansen's product but spanned a wide range of topics.  Whenever detailed questions regarding the company arose they were handled by Hansen's HQ.  I believe that the handle is their property and that the content and followers are mine.  What say you?
