Photowalk: San Francisco Christmas Lights

Hello Strobists and Travel Photographers!

REJOICE! It's the holiday season, and another free photo walk is finally on the calendar!

Let's capture some of the holiday lights, window displays, Christmas trees and jolly Santas in and around Market Street and Union Square.

Highlights from previous photo walks in this area: Ice skating rink at Union Square, View from the Cheesecake Factory at Macy's, Macy's wreath window display and of course the Xmas tree and Menorah in Union Square.

If you want to practice OCF, I recommend keeping it as simple as possible, such as  using a "strobe on a rope" and shooting like the one-armed bandit. (As I will.)  Or triggering wirelessly and still shooting like the one-armed bandit. I expect this area to be full of people, providing lots of opportunities for spontaneous portraiture, but not great for loads of equipment to keep track off. So keep it light and be aware.

I will be there at 3:45 and we will set off at 4pm on the dot. Sunset is officially at 4:54pm but expect it to get darker sooner as we will be surrounded by tall buildings.

Easy access via bus, Muni and BART. Parking garages at 5th & Mission, O'Farrell and Union Square.

This will be my last Meetup event before I take off for Burma and Southeast Asia. I hope to meet some new members and say hello again to old friends.

I got there at 3:45 and thought I'd take a photo of the tap dancer. That's when I realized I had left my SD card in the card reader in my computer! I walked up to Wallgreen's and bought a new card. When I got back to the turntable, I didn't see anyone I knew from the group. Asking people with cameras if they were with the group was pretty humorous. It seemed like EVERYONE had a camera. So, I just proceeded to take photos. Still had a good time. I'll load my photos in a couple minutes. Thanks for the suggestion for this event. I enjoyed it, even if I did have to go it alone. :)

Hi, do we need to bring tripod? Or just hand holding while taking pictures? What kind of lens do you recommend? Zoom? Prime with better F ? Wide? Even Macro? Sorry I am new to this.
