Day Hike Buzzard's Roost Trail in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

Sunday morning let's meet at the entrance to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park entrance where you can easily park by the kiosk station.  We'll meet in the parking lot area.  lovely hike up the hill to a magnificent view. Can't remember the exact mileage but at a leisurely pace it takes an hour and a half or so. Relax at the top then head back down and we all meet up at Nepenthe Restaurant for drinks/lunch as a nice topper to the hike. Plan on spending the day together traveling in car pools down the coast, the hike, the apres hike get together. Lovely way to spend the day in Big Sur. Let's plan on last Sunday in July to give folks time to plan for the day. If everything goes right, we'll drive home watching the sunset along the way home. Dogs are not allowed on the trail.

Keep close to nature's heart...and break away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.

It is about 1 hr 45 min without much traffic..to Julia Burns Pheifer State park. About 1 hr 25 min to Big Sur...and it is a bit further to Burns.. I would give 2 + hrs given that there is construction on the road in more than one place and it is a weekend and summer.

    July 25, 2013

    • Marilyn M.

The info above about driving time was for Julia Burns..which had previously been the posted information. Looks like that information had been incorrect but has just now been corrected. It will really help everyone having the correct information posted.

I won't be coming to this hike. I was supposed to carpool with Marilyn who dropped out. The hike does not seem very well organized and it is becoming too complicated.

WOW...Barbara, The leader of this hike called me on the phone and said I had to read the entire thread of all posts since the beginning if I wanted to know the correct details of this hike. She was upset by my post asking for clarification from the leader of the hike. She said I posted things that caused confusion and was very mad and was not pleasant. I took myself OFF the hike after her very hostile phone call.

Please be aware, the description of this hike is not accurate! The trail is Buzzard's Roost, and the location is Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park -- not further south as described.
    As Barbara wrote last month:
"Attention Hikers! EXACT LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS Travel South on Highway 1, 1/2 mile past Fernwood is the Entrance to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, MAKE A LEFT INTO PARK. Follow signs to campground, at the kiosk, you'll pay $10 day use fee per car for parking, get your map and we'll all meet in the parking lot. I'll be in my black and white Mini Cooper with lime green trim. Give yourself enough time to be in the parking lot at 11 am, at 11:15 am we start the hike."

I am coming from Salinas and would love to carpool rather than drive the winding roads to Big Sur. I can meet someone at the Park and Ride in Carmel at the intersection of Rio Rd and Hwy 1. The parking lot is on the right side just past the corner lot.

Constance, I am going to call Marilyn in the morning. I am not sure how to get to Crows Nest trail. It has been years since I have gone to Big Sur. I called Marilyn first to ride with her but she was no able to speak over the phone. As you can see I suggested riding with you and meeting her in Carmel so we can follow her into Big Sur.

okay Stephanie...give me your address for pickup Sunday morning....say 8:45? my numbers are home[masked]; cell[masked]

      July 26, 2013

  • Marilyn M.

PLEASE...WHO EVER is in charge of this hike..needs to put out a clarification regarding meeting place, CORRECT name of trail and exactly where we are to MEET ...ASAP

And a suggested driving time would be a very good idea
Dave sent something..but this information needs to be verified by the hike leader right away.

  • Marilyn M.

Stephanie Alt ....is looking for a RIDE...but from further south. She said she can meet at side of road. Who has room in there car and can give her a lift? PLEASE let her know.

    July 26, 2013

  • Marilyn M.

How about we all park outside the park on the road (plenty of parking there)...and then get organized together and see how many cars we need to drive in....if we even need to drive in. ?

Is the trail inside the park or across the road as stated above?

    July 26, 2013

  • constance H.

    okay, I'm in!

    July 25, 2013

  • Beatriz

I'm also looking to carpool with someone from the Santa Cruz/Capitola area. Does anyone have room in your car for one more? My schedule is dedicated to this hike for that day, so I could leave early, etc. Please let me know. My number is[masked]-1117. Thank you.

    July 25, 2013

  • Martine M.

I just realized that I jumped from the waiting list to the "Yes" list. I would love to find a ride with someone (male or female) who would drive and also have lunch at Nepenthe restaurant after the hike. Let me know. Merci beaucoup!

    July 24, 2013

  • Marilyn M.

I would like to take one female person with me (who's not in any hurry to get home and willing to leave a little early in am) with me for company and to share gas! I have a comfortable Toyota Sienna Van. I plan to go to Nepenthe afterwards for food with all and the gift store which I love and take my time in Big Sur.
I like stopping at The River's Inn and going down to the river before heading home. It's right at the road if you aren't familiar...no hiking to it. Any takers!
I agree that it could take longer than normal due to it being summer, there IS construction and there is less lanes in spots. So I plan to leave early enough to be there early. Haven't figure out how early yet.
    Marilyn[masked] Call me
I live in Seabright, Santa Cruz. Prefer to meet at my house if possible.

There have been California Condors seen in the trees right above the water fall up by the road and to the right. There were many the end of June when coming back from Treebones.

Attention Hikers! Next Sunday is our Big Sur Hike! See Directions under comments.

Top Five Reasons to Leave Early!
    1. It's Sunday
    2. In the Summer
    3. Going to Big Sur
    4. Single Lane for a short while (construction)
    5. The slowest moving vehicle in the great state of California will be either in front of you (or me) on Highway One.

I'm giving myself an extra 1+ hours coming from north Monterey County. Bring layers, Big Sur has it's own weather. Happy Trails,
    Barbara

Is the trail properly identified? I've hiked there often, and it's unknown to me-- and not on this map: http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/578/files/JuliaPfeifferBurnsWebBrochure2011Rev.pdf

Dave, I got my bird's mixed up. It's officially called "Buzzard's Roost Trail". I'm calling on Monday to check the best parking place either at Pfeiffer Park or Big Sur Lodge. It's a 5 mile roundtrip hike from the Lodge. I'll post the exact parking spot and directions to it as soon as I get some advice the best place to park 10-15 cars.

This hike needs a leader because I don't think I'm qualified to do the leading, just the joininig in part! So step up to the plate if you'd like to take the helm on this one.
