Watch wildlife & take photos at Point Lobos - Bring Lunch!

  • Jul 4, 2013 · 9:30 AM

Let's enjoy a leisurely day with the gorgeous rocky shores, tide pools, nesting birds, marine mammals and wildflowers of Point Lobos State Park. What a great way to celebrate our country! This is not really a hike, so please come only if you want to take time to linger with nature!

Trails: I'm thinking of staying on the south side (Bird Island and Sea Lion Rocks) and stopping for lunch at Pine Flat.

Duration: About 6 hours: 4 hours at the Park and 2 hours travel time.

Bring: State Parks parking pass or your share of $10 parking fee. Also bring camera, binoculars, bird books, sun protection, a sense of awe, and lunch.

Carpool: Meet at the SE corner of the 41st Ave. mall lot in Capitola, near Sears and BofA.

As always, this is an at risk activity, and by joining this hike you agree to hold the organizers and other members harmless. Please read the FAQ.

A very relaxed day, where everything fell into place. Loved the gull babies. Thanks to everyone for their company, and to Roger for joining us, and sharing his love of nature.

Perfect in all aspects: scenery, weather, conversation--and, of course, PEOPLE! Thanks for organizing this, Kitty. (And I really got a lot out of Roger's discussions!)

I will be at the Green Valley Cinemas tomorrow morning between 8:50 and 9:00 am before heading to Point Lobos as I live in Watsonville. I have room for 3 more people in my Subaru station wagon if anyone lives closer to this area. My car is red and I will be parked over by Applebee's. I plan on leaving by 9:05am. Thanks!

To anyone who is not meeting at Sears / B of A for carpooling: 1) Please let me know (as Peg has done), so we won't wait for you. 2) Each carload will be going their separate ways in the morning. We may all park in different places, so we won't be trying to find each other until lunch. 3) We can all meet for lunch at noon at the Bird Island Picnic Area (not Pine Flat or Piney Woods).

    Hi Kitty,
I'm not going to drive up to meet you at Sears; I'm going to leave from Aptos at Freedom Blvd and Hiway 1 by the off ramp on the ocean side of the freeway. If anyone wants to meet there, let me know, otherwise I'll meet you at Point Lobos.

Hi, I live in Monterey. Can I join you at Point Lobos?

Hi Teresa, At this point, we don't know what the parking situation will be like there, so it would be difficult to try to meet you somewhere at the park when we first arrive. However we could meet you at noon at the lunch spot. We will all meet at the Bird Island Picnic area at noon. Let me know if you want to do that, so we will look for you.

Thank you for reply. I think I should hike alone this time. If I can get to the picnic area at noon, I will look for you. Please don't wait for me, though.

I thought by starting our travel at 9:00 we would miss the crowd, but I see from Roger's comment there might be an issue. We can discuss it when we gather for carpooling on Thurs. Maybe each car will decide for itself where to park when they arrive down there. Since we might end up parking far apart from each other, folks from each car group could go their own way until we meet for lunch at Pine Flat.

I will lead an interpretive nature walk at 1 pm starting in the Bird Island Parking Area. The walk will be about 1 hour on the recently completed "easy access" trail, which is accessible to wheelchairs. There are also nature walks by other docents at 10 am and 2 pm. These will start at the Information Station.

Please be aware that Point Lobos is often heavily impacted by visitors on summer holidays and weekends. When all the parking spaces in the reserve fill up, we have a one car out - one car in policy often entailing significant waiting times at the entrance. Longest waits tend to be 10am-1pm. Alternatively, you can park on the side of the road outside the reserve and walk in (use great caution). We request a $1 donation for walk-in visitors. Please note that only service animals are allowed in the reserve (including in cars).

    Dear Hikers,

I increased the total number of hikers on the Pt. Lobos hike so that everyone who wants to come can come. Since it might be a very large group, maybe we should split up into two or three groups once we get to the park. I'm open to suggestions how to do that...maybe groups could be: 1)people who want to go see Bird Island, 2) people who want to go see the sea lions, 3) people who want to make the loop around the gorgeous cliffs of the West end. Or maybe some other way of splitting up? Then we can all meet back at Pine Flat for lunch at an appointed time.

Looking forward to a beautiful day.

Can anyone with room for a wheelchair swing by and pick me up on the way to 41st? I live in Live Oak off Capitola Road between 7th and 17th. Thanks.

There are two nature walks scheduled for July 4 - 10 am and 2 pm (not by me) . Both start at the Information Station. I'm working on my schedule to see if I can attend. Roger
