Pogonip to UCSC, 9-10 miles, 2000 feet elevation gain

If you are lucky enough to have Martin Luther King Holiday off, come join me on a moderately strenuous hike from Harvey West Park/Pogonip to University of Santa Cruz Reserve Property.

We will enjoy hiking through oak forests, second growth redwoods, and open meadows with views of the ocean, and will be zig-zagging through Pogonip to see most of the historic sites including the lime kilns and polo field. We then head over to the UC property to check out the rock garden and explore some unmarked trails that lead to the cats memorial and totem pole. This hike will be strenuous because of the moderately fast pace and elevation gain. If you have not hiked with me before feel free to email me with questions. We will be crossing unmarked trails that are somewhat confusing so we will need to stay together.  Wear good hiking boots, layered clothes; bring water, lunch, snacks.  Drinking water and bathrooms available at Harvey West Park.  No dogs, please.

Rain cancels the hike (we can only hope!) or if only threatening I may shorten the hike.

Please read the FAQ. This is an 'at risk' activity. By joining us on this hike you agree to hold the organizers, assistant organizers, and other members harmless. You are responsible for your own safety on the hike.

It was a really fun hike (except the dust). Lots of cyclists, but they were amazingly polite. So, this is what the dead of winter is like? Thanks, Sparky . . .

Thank you all for being so easy going about the couple of extra miles -- I was getting so excited I just kept going! Loved hiking with you all and will have to lead another hike that is maybe a shuttle hike.

Too late a notice and not quite ready to out and there by 9:30. If I had some preparation would have been very helpful. Have fun.

I hate canceling at the last minute, but have some reservations about how my sore foot [recent minor surgery] might handle the length of the hike. I am doing 5 miles with mild inflamation. Enjoy

Something has come up and I can't make it to the hike.

Please change your RSVP to "no" if you cannot make the hike tomorrow so those on the waitlist can attend.

I'll try to make it if I don't wind up working that day. Sounds like a good hike!

This seems like a great hike!

I changed the hike size limit from 20 to 25 to accommodate more on the waitlist. My experience with Meetup groups is that almost everyone on the waitlist will make it to the hike list because of last minute cancellations.

I don't know about the cats memorial, but I think I recall a totem pole. I like the idea of starting earlier than usual.
