Big Basin : Hollow Tree and Basin Trails

Distance: ~ 12 miles

Elevation gain: ~ 2500 feet.

This is a strenuous hike, NOT FOR BEGINNERS.

Exposure: It is not likely to be too hot at this time of year no matter how exposed it is.

Total time: About 6 hours including lunch. Bring Lunch and sufficient water.

Description: Meet at the Big Basin headquarters parking lot.  For those who  want to carpool, meet at Felton Safeway on Graham Road at 9:00 am and leave promptly.  Allan will meet you there at Felton Safeway.

Hike will begin from Big Basin HQ at 10:00 AM. If you meet us at Big Basin I recommend you get there no later than 9:45 AM. Meet in front of the store in Big Basin.

This time we are going to do a loop in Big Basin. Skyline to Sea to Meteor Trail then hike along Middle Ridge road for 0.7 miles to Hollow Tree trail. Continue on to Basin Trail and back to Skyline to the Sea to return to the Big Basin parking lot.  We will be hiking alongside some of the largest trees in Big Basin. You will also be accompanied by a real Big Basin docent who will be able answer your questions about these magnificent old growths.

This will be about 12 miles with some real climbing along a short stretch. I estimate 2500 feet of total climbing, could be less.

I hike at moderate speed, so anyone who would want to move faster, go on ahead, but please stop at all intersections and wait there for the group to catch up.

Please read the FAQ. This is an 'at risk' activity. By joining us on this hike you agree to hold the organizers, assistant organizers, and other members harmless. You are responsible for your own safety on the hike.

Great hike! Thank you Peggy and everyone for welcoming this newcomer. It was a challenging hike, but beautiful! And exciting with a rattlesnake story and all. I wasn't as sore as I thought I'd be! Ready for the next adventure!

I really really want to go on this hike but also want to be back in Aptos at 5:00 I'm afraid that isn't realistic so I decided not to take the chance.

Sounds great but I'm not conditioned for the distance and elevation gain yet. Have fun.

Sorry I can't make that hike. I like a challenging hike, but I have to work week days. Look forward to another.
