Big Basin Berry Creek, Golden Cascade and Silver Falls

Difficulty Level: 13.1 miles, about 2500 ft. There is a long fairly steep stretch, so you should be in fairly good condition, with good stamina.

Trails: Trails are pretty wide and well-maintained and mostly shady. There is some steep climbing at the falls with rock steps and a cable for support.

What to bring: water, lunch, snacks, tick repellent, sun protection. Please bring $2 gas money for your carpool driver. Also bring your State Parks Pass if you have one, otherwise bring $2 for your share of the $10 parking fee.

Description:   We will start out on the Sunset Trail, hike above the Golden Cascade and  Silver Falls, then take Berry Creek Falls Trail to the Berry Creek Falls, cross Waddell Creek bridge, follow Howard King Trail to Sunset connector trail and back to headquarters.  We will stop along the way for snacks and viewing the falls and have lunch at Mount McAbee Overlook as we glimpse the ocean.

Carpool:  from Felton Faire Shopping Center (Safeway) about 45 minutes to park headquarters.  There will be a no host carpool at Felton Safeway (parking lot close to Graham Hill Road) at 9 am.  The hike will take off from Big Basin at 10am.

Note: This is an 'at risk' activity. By joining us on this hike you agree to hold the organizers, assistant organizers, and other members harmless. You are responsible for your own safety on the hike. Please read the FAQ.  Always keep the person ahead of you and the person behind you in full sight, and if you plan on hiking ahead, wait for the group to catch up at all trail junctions.

There have been two fires in Big Basin recently.  Both a 3 acre fire near where we are hiking and a 1/2 acre fire also near to where we will be hiking.  There might be changes in our plan if there is any risk of fire danger on the day of our hike.  Please check the notifications on this site the day of the hike.

I was amazed when we reached the fire retardant (from last week). At first, I couldn't figure out what it was, but then saw that Cal Fire does really fine work. The uphill part of Howard King Trail kicked my butt . . .
    Thanks, Peggy and the group.

A great send off for Sara, who will begin her ascent up Mt. Whitney (14,500 feet) on Sunday at 3am. Good luck, Sara! A great and challenging hike with great people and dedicated to Sara and Dave's first hike to the falls.

So the version that Mike, Susan and I did was 13.51 miles at 5hrs 16mins, with an overall elevation gain of 2244 ft. Think I earned the big serving of ravioli I am currently stuffing in my face :-) Thanks Peggy!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
