Skyline to Sea Trail Part Trois

Distance: ~ 12 miles

Elevation gain: ~ 2500 feet.

This is a strenuous hike, NOT FOR BEGINNERS.

Exposure: Don't know. I have never been on this route, but it is not likely to be hot or sunburny at this time of year no matter how exposed it is.

Total time: About 8 hours including lunch and travel time to and from Felton Safeway lot. Bring Lunch and sufficient water.

Reminder:  This is Superbowl Sunday.  If you plan to watch the Big Game, this event will probably cost you seeing some or all of it so plan accordingly.

Description: Time for part trois of the series! Meet at the Felton Safeway parking lot to carpool to Big Basin. Hike will begin from Big Basin HQ promptly at 10AM, or a tad earlier if we get organized quickly enough. If you meet us at Big Basin I recommend you get there no later than 9:45AM.

This time we are going to do another big ol' loop within Big Basin. Skyline to Sea to Meteor Trail then hike along Middle Ridge road for 0.7 miles to Hollow Tree trail. Continue on to Basin Trail and back to Skyline to the Sea to return to the Big Basin parking lot.

This will be about 12 miles with some kick ass climbing along a short stretch, not so different from the last hike, but the total distance is a bit longer. I estimate 2500 feet of total climbing.

Oh, and for the second year in a row, Big Basin is pretty desolate on Stuporbowl Sunday. We probably did not see more than 8-10 other hikers across most of the trek (when we walked past the campgrounds near HQ, there were more of course.) Keep that in mind. . . .

This is a good hike. Takes you through the standard Big Basin deep cool redwood forests as you walk along Opal Creek. It ends up in higher and dryer manzanita type areas and eventually across some pretty cool large open areas of sandstone along the Basin Trail as you head back to Skyline to the Sea. Our total distance was 13.2 miles. I have a total altitude of 2459 ft, but this was with an uncalibrated GPS. The actual may have been as low as 2200.

First off, my apologies for arriving a few minutes late to the start. The group was friendly and talkative along the hike. The route was nice, and pace was brisk but manageable. Dave did a great job leading the group and interacting with everyone on the hike. Definitely look forward to hiking again with this group.

I've been wanting to visit this part of the park for a while, and the shingle mill was a real surprise. The pace was great, as were my fellow hikers . . .

The pace was good. The nice uphill got the blood pumping.
    Nice comraderie.
    Thanks, David.
Hey by the way - I found your map next to the front seat in the car where you were sitting. If you give me an address I can send it back to you.

Big Basin park rules are dogs are allowed in the picnic area, the campground area, and on paved roads only, so, sorry Cassandra.
