Well, you never know whom to believe, especially when it comes to public relations or advertising.
The wood pellet people had all their reasons for buying that.
Here the gas log people say wood is a no-no:

Outdoor gas log fireplaces are hot
Wood burning is not
(and it's becoming illegal)

Whittier, Ca. Rasmussen Iron Works, Oct., 2008 - With today's strapped economy environment cocooning around a Rasmussen outdoor gas log fireplace is probably the next big backyard thing.

Problem: Outdoor and indoor wood burning fireplaces are becoming illegal in some areas of the country due to the pollution effects. Some areas, Southern California for example, have new state programs forcing tough new regulations restricting both wood burning indoor and outdoor fireplaces, and the Rasmussen line was chosen as a part of a state sponsored special air quality price discount program.

A solution? With a Rasmussen outdoor gas fireplace it is possible to imitate the luxury of high end backyards without the air pollution. The next great thing is an outdoor-vented gas log fireplace.
Outdoor Vented Gas Log Fireplaces and Fire Pits add beauty, ambiance, and value to any backyard regardless of the season or locale. With more and more municipalities banning wood-burning fireplaces, clean-burning, well-designed vented gas log fireplaces are now really the in-thing. As well as artificial logs, the more contemporary homeowner even can have ceramic geometric shapes, spheres and realistic beach pebbles and rocks incorporated as the base for their fireplace. A little history - according to Rasmussen VP, Rett Rasmussen "California-inspired outdoor kitchens are a product of the 1990s.  Now, many landscape designers are recommending backyard vented gas log and contemporary gas fireplaces as an economical and great way to expand patio living, even in tough times." Rasmussen Iron Works is America's oldest premier gas log fireplace company. This 4th generation family owned business operates out of Whittier California since 1907. Rasmussen produces a huge variety of hand-applied ceramic dye gas log sets so incredibly realistic they are mistaken for the real thing. They are hand-dyed because heat resistant paint used in other gas log sets will give off odors and is affected by heat and flame. Rasmussen designs burners so the flame plays over the particular log set in a predetermined fire flow creating an incredibly realistic look that will fool almost anyone. No other company offers such a complete line of outdoor-vented fireplace gas logs and contemporary shapes. In addition Rasmussen also makes gas log replacement sets for existing fire wood burning pits. Consumers may visit www.vipgrill.com ckick the fireplace icon at the left side. Rasmussen Chill Buster Gas Log Set
