This summer, Debby Boland Watt and Liz Kohlenberg are offering a seven session class in vocal improvisation and circle singing through the Arbutus Folk School in downtown Olympia.
Circle Singing is based on the musical influences of Bobby McFerrin & his Voicestra colleague Rhiannon, author of Vocal River. Layering improvised parts that draw from call and response, vocal percussion, storytelling and free improvisation, we will create incredible complex pieces of a cappella music. Designed for singers of every vocal level, we will unite our voices, exploring improvisation within the comfort of a safe vocal community. There’s learning in the listening, creative collaboration and self-discoveries for all.
The class will be offered on seven Thursday evenings from 6 pm to 7:30 pm -- June 19th, June 26th, July 3, July 10th, July 17th and July 24th. Cost is $18 per class session. You can register for as many sessions as you wish -- but we are hoping that folks who already like this form will sign up for several sessions, or all of them!
Please register through the Folk School by June 13 for any or all sessions. You can also register for any one class up to five days before the class begins. There is a minimum size of seven people for each class -- if the class does not fill, you will receive a full refund from the school.
