ONADC October Meetup

After hosting our Meetup in March, the PBS NewsHour team is back to sponsor ONADC’s kickoff to the ONA10 Conference. We'll have drink specials, and a delicious spread of appetizers for your noshing pleasure.

While you might most associate the venerable organization with its Emmy Award-winning broadcast, now in its 35th year, the NewsHour is pushing hard to expand its substance-over¬-style brand of news and analysis online, in social media, mobile and other emerging platforms.

Since we last heard from them, the NewsHour team’s Gulf Oil Leak Meter widgets garnered more than 19 million pageviews (double that of “Keyboard Cat”), streamed 516 years of video and was embedded on or linked to by more than 6,000 sites, including many news organizations.

The oil widget was named a 2010 Knight-Batten Notable Entry – a year after the NewsHour’s data-driven Patchwork Nation project won a Special Distinction Award and spawned a new book.

The NewsHour’s new iPhone app, which streams HD video, became the top free news app on iTunes shortly after its release.

The NewsHour and ONADC welcome you! Enjoy the conference and your time in the nation’s capital!

Cheers,

Laura, Tiffany and Matt

Fantastic meetup. One thing: That many people were never meant to fit into that space. It got waaay too crowded.

It was hard to hear the speakers, and I felt bad for the sponsor from "NewsHour" because only people near the lectern were paying attention to him. If the event is intended to involve speakers, I'm not sure a bar is the best setting. Two thumbs up for the mixer element, though, and great raffle prizes.

But wait! There's more! Just before the ONA opening reception Thursday, you can mingle nearby with the Digital group of the Asian American Journalists Association. Meet AAJA-Digital co-chairs Kakki Lewis and Paul Cheung:
