Founding Managing Editor Sought for Water Citizen News
Unique opportunity available for entrepreneurial editor/journalist to become Founding Managing Editor for the News Division of Water Citizen - a social venture providing water news, education, and “watertainment”™ to for water-aware citizens.
Founded by water planning and policy expert Cat Shrier, based on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, Water Citizen will provide an understanding of key water stories, with access to water experts and water newsmakers, and presents news in a balanced nonadvocacy fashion, with stories written for a general audience of water-aware citizen. Water Citizen will be a free, independent non-advocacy press, presenting stories on water news from many perspectives, including water and business, technology and innovation, policy, community, sports and leisure, arts and entertainment, culture and spirituality.
Scheduled to launch in 2012, Water Citizen will include three divisions: News, Education, and WaterTainment™. Water Citizen’s initial offering will be the Education Division’s Water Citizen’s Guide to Water in Congress, with Charter Sponsorships for this guide providing the initial revenue for the rest of the organization. Requests for Charter Sponsor Packages have been received from more than 80 corporations. Individual citizen support will also be sought through Kickstarter. Partnerships with several major water organizations are also under development, expanding our reach throughout the water community.
Managing Editor will be the founding head of the News Division. As this is a startup, the position will require flexibility and willingness to support development of the overall organization in many capacities. Specific responsibilities likely to include:
- editing (and some writing) of news content – including integration of original and user-generated content; crowdjournalism news produced through NewsiT (Newsit.net); and content produced by freelance and intern journalists
- management and oversight of news staff, freelance contractors, and journalism interns
- management of content layout and coordination with web contractor and with publisher on placement of sponsorships -initially using WordPress Premium news theme – now under development by web contractor
Journalism/communications/English degree required, along with 7-10 years news experience. Online multimedia news background strongly preferred. Candidates should demonstrate interest in and commitment to NONADVOCACY coverage of water stories for greater public understanding of water. Must commit to a minimum of 16 hours/week pre-revenue. Initial compensation in NOT available until after Charter Sponsor campaigns are completed; initial compensation will come from a portion of Charter Sponsor revenue received.
