One Month Rails: Study Group!

Welcome One Month Rails students! This is a great place to work on your Ruby on Rails project and get support.

Want a code buddy? Great! We'll be breaking into smaller study groups and we're happy to pair you up with someone awesome just like yourself.

If it's your first time with Rails? No problem ...we're here to get you up and running. All levels of welcome.

I'll be there, along with the One Month Rails team and Rails TAs.

See you soon,

    Question:

    1. How do you use the rails console to show the current user that is logged in/signed in?
    2. How do you show the pins associated with this current user? Pin.id and Pin.description, and user_id?

Stil struggling with object and methods and what is possible to find out in the console.

http://gentle-atoll-4336.herokuapp.com - I create the omrails app and pushed it to heroku - no errors but the browser doesn't show the default home page of the rails app like it does on the local server. It works fine on the local server and the app is on github but no content is displayed. Any ideas?

Just went through the same issue. Move on to the next lesson, set root to home. Push to heroku, should work.

Anyone familiar with Heroku - 'git push' works without errors but 'git push heroku' does not - The application runs fine on the local web server and does not push to heroku so I am trying to figure how to read the heroku logs and trouble shoot - tips welcome!

Hi Neil, what's your Heroku url?

https://rocky-dusk-114... - it works now. I had to re-run heroku run rake db:migrate. Thanks.

What was the name of the guy from Heroku that was at the meet up? My apologies for not remembering your name.

    August 27, 2013

    • One M.

Robbie :) He was the guy kind enough to hand out some of the Heroku tshirts

Will there be a lecture or is it just a pair meeting? Will you be video taping the meetup?

    1 · August 25, 2013

    • One M.

Hey Kristi, short lecture but mostly just pairing people up and we'll be going around the room helping people answer questions. Followed by drinksssss...

    rails -v
    /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:341:in `bin_path': can't find gem rails (>= 0) with executable rails (Gem::GemNotFoundException)
    from /usr/local/bin/rails:19
I had just installed rails v4 but for some reason the path is looking for rails in the wrong directory even though it was working prior to this app. The only thing was that I upgraded iTerm in between. May be my first question since I am not a unix geek :-) I have to figure out how to debug this -- hmmm.

You can try this guide for help installing rails: http://installrails.c...

The only thing new to me is the line rails new sample_app -m http://installrails.c... with the -m portion - I usually just do rails new sample_app. Everything else I have installed correctly although the railsintaller package is based on 3.2 rails and 1.9.x ruby and I have v 4 and Ruby 2.0

Don't have laptop but have iPad - will that do for this session? Have my big iMac at home that I usually work on. Have a project in mind to do so would love to learn a little rails and work with someone on the project.

I have my iMac already setup with the rails environment and sublime. Everything is running well. I tested the server. It all seems to work. I'll see if I can borrow a laptop but most of the time I will work on my iMac. I wonder how effective it is going to be if I remotely connect to my iMac. Will there be a good internet connection at the Meetup?

      August 16, 2013

    • One M.

There should be a good Internet connection... it's in partnership with Rackspace.

Question on Editor - What is better Sublime or Textmate? Does it matter?

    August 16, 2013

    • One M.

I'd recommend Sublime. It's free, and the most simple for students to use. Honestly they're both fine, but especially for this class I'd like all students to have Sublime installed http://www.sublimetex...

That's what I got - It's a really nice editor. The shortcuts are amazing - this is a good screencast series for using Sublime - https://tutsplus.com/c...

mattan, may I see work from past students who have reviewed your class?

    1 · August 15, 2013

    • Holly K

I'm strongly considering signing up for the video lessons, and some of those student examples would convince me!

      1 · August 15, 2013

    • One M.

Hey Yu! You're the best. Thanks. And Hey Holly good question... we have student projects listed on the homepage of www.onemonthrails.com... these are all projects that students made in the weeks after taking OMR. Hope that helps.

see you there! Bring your laptop.

  • Ryutaro M.

Do I have to take the online class (www.onemonthrails.com ) to join this meet up ??

    August 14, 2013

    • One M.

nope, you don't need to have taken One Month Rails. For new students you'll want to bring your laptop and we'll help you get setup with Rails... plus answer any questions for you about Web dev. We'll pair off students, and have a speaker... hope to see you there!
