Movie Night: The Black Power Mixtapes 1967-1975

  • Feb 16, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • My Place in San Leandro

From 1967 to '75, a film crew aimed cameras at major figures in the Black Power movement, creating hours of footage that remained unreleased for decades. In clips, Stokely Carmichael, Huey P. Newton and Angela Davis discuss the movement's evolution.

I saw this movie last year and thought it was really well done. Let's watch it together at my place and follow up with thoughtful discussion.

The event will be potluck style, so please bring something to share with the group.

Thanks to all the attendees! Honestly one of my favorite meetup events to date (which says something after 588 events and 6 years of organizing). Inspired to do more movie nights in the future.

This was my first experience with attending a meetup. It was great and I appreciated the hospitality and sharing. Thank you.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and subsequent dialogue. My dissertation work is actually related to the impact of racial identity development in African-American students and leadership so this was right down my alley. :) Had a fantastic time! Oh and I finally got my voice back...lemon and honey :)

It was a great experience. I appreciated the fact that the host opened her house to the new comers. I enjoyed the discussions, learned and gained a lot of insights from several people's stories to learn about the struggles, the now and the future of the black community/culture, all that jazz. I appreciated people's openness and sharing their thoughts!

Hi, I'm new to this group. I saw this last year when my couchsurfing host in ATL showed this to me. I liked it and I want to watch it again. Of course, it would be awesome to hear people's thoughts since I am totally an outsider but I wanna learn. :)
