Happy New Year everyone! I hope that 2012 has started of well for everyone. If you have recently joined Onyx, welcome! This group hosts a variety of events for black professionals throughout the bay area, but primarily in the Peninsula and the South Bay. We've been organizing social, business and professional events since 2007 (time really flies....).  I say we because the Onyx is member-driven group (meaning that members are empowered to plan and host social, professional and community service oriented events). This year in particular, I'm definitely going to need more members to step up to host events and share event ideas. So if you have a great event idea in mind and would like it to be added as an event, please let me know. I can't tell you how many cool places and things I've learned courtesy of Onyx members over the years.

Upcoming Events

Happy Hour at Joya Tonight: Just a quick reminder about tonight's event at Joya. Wow! It looks like the turn-out for tonight's event is going to be amazing. If you're plans have changed, please update your rsvp so I will have an accurate headcount for the event. I must stay that we may be bit squeezed if everyone shows. That said, I've had nothing but good experiences at Joya and I gave them a head's up so hopefully we'll all fit in just find. Parking around Palo Alto is usually pretty easy and almost always free but there is a large lot on with an entrance on Ramona if you get desperate.

Also, I'm getting there early so that I can stake claim to some space. It would be really really great if some folks can arrive a bit early to join me there.

Given the number of attendees (seriously I think we'll temporarily increase the black population in Palo Alto exponentially) we should be easy to spot. But if you need any assistance, please send me a text at[masked]-4103.

February is going to be jammed packed with a number of great events.

  • Art Walk in Oakland on Feb 3rd: Details are here.
  • Sweetheart Breakfast on Feb 4th: Join Kaye in Foster City for a fun morning mixer event at El Torito. The event is a fundraiser for Delta Sigma Theta's Annual Scholarship Fund. Details about the event are here and tickets can be purchased ($35 for all you can eat) here.
  • Jamaican Food and Drinks at Sweet Fingers on Feb 4th: Details are here. Please note that I change the time to 5:00 pm because the live reggae happy hour is from 4-7 pm on Saturday. If that effects your ability to attend, please update your rsvp.
  • Superbowl Potluck Party at Rodney's on February 5th: The details are here. Even though 49ers didn't make it, it's sure to be a fun game to watch. Space is limited to 25 members so don't delay rsvping if you'd like to attend.
  • Ski/Snowboarding Trip President's Day weekend: Save the date! The details are still getting ironed out but Kevin and Cliff are hosting.
  • Celebrate Black History Month with Mural Music and Arts Project in East Palo Alto on Feb 18th: For folks in town President's day weekend, please join Mural Music and Arts Project Black History Month celebration. The Mural Music & Arts Project is a youth development organization inspiring positive youth outcomes through the arts. The event will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and will feature art, musical performances, and historical reflection. I will post additional information about the program content as soon as I have it.

That's all for now. Thanks for reading and I look forward to seeing a number of you tonight.
