Sorry, I forgot to mention one additional thing- although Onyx is a non-political group, I wanted to mention that Onyx member Tamar has posted a message about the Inauguration West celebration at the Metreon.  For more details, check out-
Good night everyone.

Subject: [blackbiz-233] Onyx News January 5, 2009: More Events/Jamaica Trip Status
Date: Tue, 6 Jan[masked]:36:33 -0500

Greetings Onyx,
I hope everyone had a great holiday and survived the first holiday free week of 2009. I know that Jeremy has already sent messages today but I wanted to get out a little message of my own since so many new people have joined the group since my last little newsletter in late November.

Since it's the beginning of the year, I'll start with a basic introduction. As for myself, I'm Lakeisha and I'm a lawyer by day. I'm originally from San Jose but lived elsewhere after high school until 2006 (LA and DC). Jeremy and I are the co-organizers of Onyx, which we started in July/August 2007. We created the group to fill a gap- the lack of opportunities to connect with other black professionals (aside from the few we work with). The group's reception has greatly exceeded our expectations.

2008 was a really big year for Onyx- we started the year with less than 100 hundred people and honestly thought that the group might crest at 200 or so people. Instead we went past 500 people and hosted literally hundreds of events in that time. To our shock and delight, the group has continued to grow and we have continued to connect some truly great positive intelligent people together and find both fellowship and friendship. It's been such a great thing and without getting super sappy on this Monday night, I'll just say thank you to all of you who have participated in this group-you've enriched my life and enlivened the spirits of myself and many others.

We're hoping for 2009 to be an even bigger year, so if you've just joined the group or joined but have yet to make it to an event, please check out our calendar every now and again. Or better yet, plan your own event by sending either me or Jeremy an email with the details.

In addition to the Superbowl event and the Annual Soul in the Snow event Jeremy has mentioned, we have a few more events in January thus far:

There are a number of other events in development so check out the calendar often.

Jamaica Trip Status: Sorry to be MIA with the details on this. Truth be told, I had my heart set on paying 800 and the 50% increase to $1200 made me a bit ambivalent about the trip. So I'm going to open the floor and invite members to help me plan a spring/summer trip for the group. My only requirements for this trip is that it needs to involve a beach. Ideally it will be 3-5 days max and will be a high value trip (not necessary cheap just economically sensitive). Location is optional but my tentatives are Baja, Mex, the Caribbean or Hawaii. If you've got an idea or know an agent with a hook up, email me directly or post comments on this thread.
