New Meetup: OneforJasmina: Volunteer Effort To Save A Life [Kevin's Event]

From: Lakeisha
Sent on: Monday, March 23, 2009 9:22 AM
Announcing a new Meetup for Onyx (Bay Area Black Professionals)!

What: OneforJasmina: Volunteer Effort To Save A Life [Kevin's Event]

When: April 4,[masked]:00 AM

Where: Click the link below to find out!

Meetup Description: The Cause: Jasmina, bright and beautiful African-American 6-year old, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of Leukemia with an estimated 2 months to live. To cure it, she needs a bone marrow transplant. As you may or may not know, finding bone marrow matches for African Americans is nearly impossible for a number of reasons and essentially we're working against time to find a match.

The Need - 3 sets:

Event Need #1: Attend the Drive or Alternatively, register to receive the donor registration kit.
The bone marrow drive will be held at the African American Museum and Library in Oakland, on April 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The purpose of the donor drive is to give a cheek swab to the people who come out in order to test for matches. If you're able to come out and get tested that would be really great. If you are unable to attend the drive, you can alternatively order a free do it yourself bone marrow donor registration kit, here.

Event Need #2: Volunteer to assist with an event logistically.
The event needs volunteers to assist. The volunteer needs are described in detail here/ If you're interested and can commit to volunteering (read), please e-mail Kevin Hamilton directly at [address removed]

Event Need #3: Spread the word
And much more importantly, please spread the word out to African Americans in your networks to come out and give a cheek swab to test for matches. You can do this by
1. Forwarding the flyer and emailing people you know that would be interested in participating
2. Posting flyers at universities and colleges
3. Contacting media organizations, universities and churches to see if they can publicize the event
