Civic Hack Night

Hack Night is a chance to work on civic tech projects, collaboratively.

At the beginning of the meetup we'll introduce the projects, then split into groups (for each project) to work on them.

Bring a project, an idea, or willingness to jump in on one. Many projects will involve tech, but all abilities and skills are welcome... graphic design, project management, writing, community engagement, software development, or just some cleverness, communication skills and determination to make a positive impact on our region.

Currently active projects:

• Summit County Parks & Trails App (forked from HackNEO and in collaboration with Code for Summit County)

• Open Data Catalog for Cleveland / Cuyahoga County, (beginnings at .)

• LocalWiki for Cleveland:

Other project ideas:

• Set up an OpenTreeMap instance

• NPMap (Getting CVNP data into OpenStreetMap)

• Set up a CartoDB + Mapbox server for group use.

• Bicycling infrastructure mapping/assessment

• Public toilet map/finder.

We're meeting on opposite Wednesdays as Code for Summit County, (Akron's Code for America Brigade,) to promote collaboration and cross-pollination.

I just started a new job this week. (Yea!) I'd like to be there, but I've got other things that I have to take care of. (Boo!) I do know that next meetup, I'll be passing on also, (Boo!). But Ohio Linux Fest is that weekend, and we'll be making plans for it, etc. (Yea!).

    How'd it go, y'all?

It was good. We effectively broke into two groups-- the Summit County Parks & Trails App and the LocalWiki for Cleveland. The Parks and Trails App is now running on a couple more machines, and it sounds like the LocalWiki crew had a good time.

I'm confused, does it start at 6:00 pm or 10:00 pm?

I have been working away at getting a copy of the Summit County Parks & Trails App up and running on the smallest possible image. I've got it down to 32GB, and with a little extra testing, it should be ready to pass around tomorrow night.

    Looking forward to tomorrow!

Image produced: 25GB. Will auto-expand to 30GB, so bring some space on your laptops and VMWare or VirtualBox tools to run it (it's a vmware image, ATM).
