  • London OpenCoffee Meetup

I wholeheartedly believe that great ideas come from unexpected places...and the people starting new companies are loaded with ideas (some good, some great, some lousy, but that doesn't matter)...and entrepreneurs, as you'll find at this meetup, are eager to share their ideas with others. This meetup, like similar events/groups, are great to practice your pitch, check some assumptions, meet potential clients, business partners, staff and more.

There are alot of people with Web 2.0 projects planned or underway and each person you meet is a good bouncing board to test out how well your idea stands up to criticism. There are also a great many businesses servicing Internet projects touting for business so it's a good place to find various services. It's also a good place to discuss the latest technologies. Not sure it's the place to find funding? Perhaps?

Have been meaning to attend the OpenCoffee Meetup for months, have heard good things from many people, including... Håkon Haugnes & Geir Rasmussen from the Global Name Registry, Nic Brisbourne at DFJ Esprit, Robert Loch from Internet People and a few others. I got to the event quite late, but still managed to meet a great bunch of young and experienced entrepreneurs at various stages in their tech startups or ventures. Two notable individuals were Matt brooke-Smith who is developing a range of very innovative iPhone apps and Nick Donnelly at Netshops. Will definitely be attending the next OpenCoffee Meetup and arriving a lot earlier!

i couldnt see saul... i felt it was very disjointed... how do you know who does what? where do you start? no one looked like a developer to me... i would like to have seen stickers or areas for the different kinds of people - developers, entrepeneurs, investors etc. 20 people, all looked like entrepeneurs to me... i dont want to go around saying hi to 20 ppl for the sake of it. sorry, i really wanted to get something positive from this and meet some developers... but found it a waste of time :(

Yarden Yaroshevski on Mar 23, 2007.

  • London OpenCoffee Meetup

It is good to know where to meet people with similar interests. However, i felt most people that I talked to already have their business up and running and I felt they looked puzzled at my idea, even more because I am still research about it. I felt an expectation in the air that It was not interesting yet because I had nothing to show. Nothing up and running yet. No cards to give, no web site. I felt that for them I was wasting their time. Nevertheless, it touch me it is important to develop a better catch introduction of my idea so it can be interpreted in a better away as well. Also with the majority of attendents being man, and my idea being in the lingerie/self-steem courses - maybe ladies clothes for man - they did not have a clue how to exchange ideas in this area and felt lost in speaking to me. On the other hand, Saul's idea for me to start with a blog sounded very usefull and it is something I will be looking at.

  • London OpenCoffee Meetup

After going to the last meet up I am delighted to say that it was the single most important social/networking/enjoyable business event I have been to since entering the exciting (and stressful) world that is 'the Internet Start-up'. I think one feature which could work is allowing all the attendees to post a small blurb about their company and allow others to vote on ideas they want to hear more about. The idea(s) with the most votes get a 5 minute slot in the middle of the event to present to everyone in attendance or just those that are interested. Lets just hope

lori faye on Dec 11, 2008.

  •  I joined with high expectations - I wanted to meet potential investors and trade advice with other entrepreneurs. I even brought one of my colleagues along - unfortunately everyone we met was a service business offering services to startups. Whilst that is fine in the right situation (and the people we met were very nice), it wasn't what we were looking for and wasn't, what I believe is in the best interests of this group. Prefer and would recommend Beer and Partners' funding fair, though this isn't a drop in meeting.
